Apple today introduced the new AirTag, an accessory that helps users track and find the items that matter through the Find My app, with an extended detection range and a louder speaker.

Apple is putting the spotlight on the Find My network feature, which allows users to track everyday items such as keys, wallets, backpacks and luggage. For the first time, Precision Finding extends to Apple Watch: users can take advantage of it on Apple Watch Series 9 or later, as well as Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, bringing the tracking experience to the wrist.

Apple has also upgraded the audible notification, as the new AirTag is 50% louder than the previous generation, allowing it to be heard from up to twice the distance. Combined with Precision Finding improvements and a new, distinctive beep, locating at home becomes easier, such as in cases where keys have been lost between sofa cushions or a purse before going out.

Find My supports tracking of AirTags, Apple devices, and compatible third-party devices, while helping users stay in touch with friends and family, with an emphasis on privacy protection. When an AirTag is out of range of the paired iPhone, Find My network can help locate it: it's a "crowdsourced" network of Apple devices that use Bluetooth to detect the location of an accessory or device and display its approximate location to the owner.

The new AirTag also integrates with Share Item Location on iOS, which allows for temporary and secure location sharing with trusted third parties, such as airlines, to help recover delayed or lost luggage. Apple has partnered with more than 50 airlines to privately and securely accept Share Item Location links. According to SITA, use of the feature has reduced baggage delays by 26% and incidents of 'truly lost' or irrecoverable bags by 90%, with access by authorized staff only and automatic expiry after seven days.

On the security side, AirTag does not store physical location data or history on the device, while communication with the Find My network is protected with end-to-end encryption so that only the owner can access the location data. Apple also mentions cross-functional notifications and unique Bluetooth identifiers that change frequently.

The new AirTag is priced the same as the previous model, at $29 for a single device and $99 for a four-pack. In addition, Apple continues to offer free personalized engraving for purchases through apple.com and the Apple Store app, exclusively for users in the US. In terms of design, it maintains the same form and is compatible with all existing AirTag accessories, while also joining Apple's environmental goals with recycled materials and 100% fibrous packaging.
