Artificial intelligence is no longer a theoretical debate about the future, it is already present and actively influencing the way image is produced, trafficked and consumed. From advertising visuals to e-commerce and stock photography, AI has invaded a marketthat until recently was considered purely creative and human.
Amidst this new landscape, a critical question arises: are we talking about the collapse of the profession or a profound transformation?

To understand what's really going on behind the headlines and noise, we turned to a professional in the field. We asked Alexandros Tsagkalidis (https://alexgr.studio) a photographer from Thessaloniki with over ten years of experience in the field, how he himself has experienced the market change, which jobs were affected first, how clients are reacting and whether AI ultimately works as a threat or as a tool.
The discussion that follows does not focus on theoretical scenarios, but on real experiences from the daily life of a professional photographer operating in a market that is changing at a faster rate than ever before.

When did you realize that AI is not just another image processing tool, but something that fundamentally changes the market?
The first indication was not technological, but commercial. The briefs began to change. Clients who used to ask for regular photography were now asking if "an AI equivalent" could be done. In some cases, it wasn't even about quality, but speed and lowest cost. There I understood that we are not talking about a new filter or a better software; we are talking about a change in the image production model.
Which areas of photography did it first influence?
Stock photography and simple banner content were affected first. Generic images, concept visuals, product mockups — all can now be produced without physical photography. In e-commerce, especially in products without a strong identity, AI has significantly reduced the need for photography. Where the image does not require authenticity, emotion or a real environment, AI has found a place to replace some of the production.
Have you seen any job losses due to this change?
Yes, but not in the way many fear. Not all jobs disappeared, but low-cost productions were squeezed. That is, the customers who were looking for economic solutions of the type "a simple photo with the product". On the other hand, the demand for projects that require direction, storytelling and authentic presence has increased. The market was not zeroed out — it was separated more clearly.
How has the customer mindset changed?
The first question now is often: "Do you really need a photo shoot?" This alone shows the shift. The customer compares options that did not exist before. At the same time, pressure has increased for speed and production of large volumes of content. AI has upped the pace of the market, and it's affecting the way we price, organize and present our work.
Do you personally use AI tools?
Yes, but not as a substitute for photography. I use them for pre-visualization, to show ideas before a production, for quick moodboards or to speed up retouching. At this level, AI acts as a productivity booster. The question is not if you will use it, but how and at what point in the process.
Ultimately, do you think we are talking about collapse or transformation?
I don't see a collapse. I see restructuring. Services that relied solely on technical execution are being squeezed. Instead, creative direction, brand understanding, and the ability to manage real-world conditions become more valuable. AI doesn't take away the importance of the photographer, it takes away the importance of just executing without a strategy.
Conclusions
The debate surrounding artificial intelligence in photography often swings between two extremes: absoluteexcitement or absolute fear. In practice, however, the reality is more complex. Technology accelerates processes, reduces costs and changes balances, but does not eliminate the need for creative thinking, aesthetic judgment and strategic direction.
The photography market isn't standing still — it's adapting. Those who invest only in technical execution face more pressure. Those who evolve, understand new tools and integrate AI into their workflow gain a competitive advantage. The image remains a powerful communication tool; it's just that the way it is produced is being transformed.
The question, after all, is not whether AI will change photography — it already has. The essential question is who will choose to adapt and take advantage of the new reality.
As Alexandros Tsagkalidis points out, "technology does not replace creativity, it replaces stagnation".
