North Korea Sending 50,000 Troops to Russia: Ukraine War Update 2026

The Ukraine war briefing reveals that North Korea is sending 50,000 troops to Russia, according to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking a significant escalation in the conflict. This deployment, up from an estimated 30,000 announced in July, underscores the deepening military alliance between Pyongyang and Moscow. Zelenskyy also called on South Korea to provide air defense support, highlighting Ukraine's critical shortages in this area.

North Korea's Growing Military Role in Russia

Zelenskyy stated that North Korea will continue to build its experience in modern warfare, receive licenses from Russia, and acquire various military tools. This month, Ukraine's military intelligence reported that a North Korean missile unit has begun deploying personnel and equipment to western Russia, potentially equipped with 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers for strikes against Ukraine. This follows North Korea's earlier deployment of 14,000 soldiers to Russia's Kursk region in 2024, where thousands have been wounded or killed.

Weapons and Ammunition Supply

North Korea has supplied Russia with millions of artillery and mortar rounds, sometimes of dangerously low quality, according to Russian milbloggers and troops. Additionally, Pyongyang has provided ballistic missiles, long-range artillery, and multiple-launch rocket systems, as confirmed by Ukrainian and independent assessments. This material support has been crucial for Russia's sustained offensive operations.

Ukraine's Call for South Korean Support

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine "would very much like to receive support from South Korea in an area where we have a shortage," specifically referring to air defense systems. He added that Ukraine is ready to work on drone deals and other areas, with diplomats in contact with Seoul to push potential agreements. Ukraine's air defense is severely strained, especially against Russian ballistic missiles, which are difficult to intercept without advanced systems like the US-owned Patriot.

Potential New Weapons Package

In a related development, seventy ATACMS short-range ballistic missiles are part of a weapons package Ukraine is poised to buy from Turkey, according to US congressional documents. The US would need to approve the resale, which could provide Ukraine with additional long-range strike capabilities.
