Sadiq Khan has been given a peerage by Keir Starmer just days before the prime minister stands down, marking a dramatic shift in UK political dynamics. This move could open the door for one of Labour’s most high-profile mayors to join Andy Burnham’s cabinet in the future. The creation of 26 new peers has sparked debate about the balance of power in the House of Lords.
Political Reactions and Implications
Andy Burnham is “too in hock to vested interests” to offer real change, Zack Polanski has said as the Greens launched a pushback against the incoming prime minister. The Greens portray Burnham as cautious and weak on wealth taxes, Gaza, and rent controls. Meanwhile, Labour’s foreign aid cuts mean reductions of up to 90% in bilateral support to some African countries, according to Foreign Office figures.

Local Government Reorganisation
Jonathan Carr-West, chief executive of the LGIU local government thinktank, said the government has “in general opted for more, smaller councils rather than fewer, larger ones” in replacing two-tier councils with unitary authorities. He noted that what matters is not council size, but how well it works. However, the County Councils Network is more critical, with chair elect Sean Matthews stating: “Today’s decisions show how far ministers have departed from the statutory criteria and programme’s original aims.”
