US Politics and Nazi Germany: When to Compare Now 2026

In the realm of US politics and Nazi Germany, the question of when to compare the two has long been fraught. But according to Robert P Jones, an expert on Christian nationalism, the time for that comparison is now. In his latest book, Backslide: Reclaiming a Faith and a Nation After the Christian Turn Against Democracy, Jones argues that the rise of Christian nationalism and the language of racial purity used by Donald Trump echo the early days of Nazi Germany. He writes, “This is our 1933.”

Why Compare US Politics to Nazi Germany?

The lawyer Mike Godwin famously coined Godwin’s Law: as an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. But Jones didn’t take this comparison lightly. He studied US demographic numbers, the rise of Christian nationalism, and Trump’s rhetoric before concluding that the analogy is inescapable. The book begins with the rise of the Nazi party and the complicity of German Christians and churches. Jones cites Martin Niemöller, a Lutheran pastor imprisoned for opposing Hitler, who for the first four years of Hitler’s reign did not fully oppose the Nazis. Niemöller later regretted not speaking out sooner. Jones asks, “Just as God asked Niemöller where he was between 1933 and 1937, God will ask us where we were between 2025 and 2028.”

The Role of Christian Nationalism

Jones argues that Christians who back Trump and the MAGA movement a second time know what they are joining and bear responsibility. This is not a casual comparison; it is a warning. Christian nationalism, he says, is a threat to democracy because it seeks to privilege one religion over others and undermine the separation of church and state. The parallels to 1930s Germany are striking: a charismatic leader, a disaffected populace, and a religious majority willing to overlook authoritarian tendencies.
