Eddie Howe has emerged as the preferred candidate of Jason Wilcox to replace Michael Carrick should Manchester United decide to change manager, with the director of football believing Howe's extensive Premier League experience places him ahead of other potential targets. The news comes as pressure mounts on Carrick following the club's poorest start to a season in recent memory.
Why Jason Wilcox Favors Eddie Howe
Wilcox, who joined United as director of football, reportedly views Howe as the ideal candidate to stabilize the club and restore its competitive edge. Howe's track record in the Premier League, particularly his five-year stint at Bournemouth and his transformative spell at Newcastle, has convinced Wilcox that he is the right man for the job.

Howe left Newcastle in late July to take a break from the game, but it is understood he would seriously consider a return for the United role should it be offered. His availability and proven ability to build teams make him an attractive option.
Howe's Impressive Managerial Record
During his five years at Newcastle, Howe impressed by leading the team to the 2025 Carabao Cup, ending a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. After taking over from Steve Bruce in November 2021, Howe guided Newcastle to an 11th-place finish, winning 12 of the last 18 games after a difficult start that saw the team go 14 games without a victory.
Howe also took Newcastle back into the Champions League after 20 years in 2023 and qualified again two seasons later. His ability to turn around struggling teams and compete at the highest level is precisely what United need.
Cost Comparison: Howe vs. Emery
Howe would be less expensive to bring in than Unai Emery, another admired candidate, because Aston Villa would demand about £20m in compensation for their manager. Howe's current status as a free agent makes him a more financially viable option for United, who are mindful of financial fair play regulations.
| Candidate | Current Status | Compensation Required | Premier League Experience |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eddie Howe | Free agent (left Newcastle July 2025) | None | Yes (Bournemouth, Newcastle) |
| Unai Emery | Aston Villa manager | ~£20m | Yes (Aston Villa) |
| Julian Nagelsmann | Free agent (former Germany coach) | None | No |
Other Candidates in the Frame
Julian Nagelsmann, the former Germany and Bayern Munich coach, is highly regarded by Christopher Vivell, United's head of recruitment. However, Wilcox's view may hold more sway with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who controls football policy at the club. Ratcliffe's influence will be crucial in any managerial decision.
Carrick is under serious pressure after the club's poorest start to a season, and the United hierarchy is reportedly considering all options. The next few weeks could determine Carrick's future. What This Means for Manchester United
If United decide to part ways with Carrick, Howe's appointment would signal a shift towards proven Premier League experience and a track record of building competitive teams. His ability to work with limited resources at Bournemouth and his success at Newcastle suggest he could thrive at Old Trafford. However, Howe's break from the game may raise questions about his readiness to return, and United would need to move quickly to secure his services before other clubs come calling.
