The best super-session ales are redefining how we enjoy beer, offering low alcohol without sacrificing flavor. As a working parent, I discovered Kernel Brewery’s Table Beer a decade ago—a 3% ABV pale ale that delivers a satisfying buzz without losing function. Now, these low-alcohol brews are having a moment.
Why Super-Session Ales Are Booming
Evin O’Riordain, brewer at Kernel, tells me sales have steadily increased over the past decade, and 2026 has seen a tipping point. “For the first time ever, Table Beer became the thing we made the most,” he says. This aligns with the population’s growing interest in no-lo drinks.

However, when it comes to beer, zero-alcohol examples are much better represented than low-alcohol ones—at least in major retailers. Only a handful of the latter are available in supermarkets, including Small Beer’s 2.3% IPA, Jiddler’s Tipple’s 3.8% Everyday Pale Ale (both Ocado), and Beavertown Satellite (2.8%) and Dark Star’s Hophead (3.4%), both at Waitrose.
What Makes a Good Super-Session Beer?
Flavor and body tend to be sacrificed when alcohol is reduced or removed, so maintaining those is key. With Table Beer, O’Riordain says he was trying to emulate traditional British cask beers, albeit using “clean and neutral” American yeasts instead of “spicier” English ones.
“You want something that’s refreshing and has enough body to carry the hops,” he explains. “It’s about balance—you don’t want it to taste thin or watery.” The background to this story is set out in UK Alcohol-Free Beer Boom at Risk from Definition Rules. The Future of Low-Alcohol Beer
With the success of Table Beer and increasing consumer demand, more breweries are likely to enter the low-alcohol space. O’Riordain believes the trend is here to stay. “People want to drink better, not more,” he says. “Low-alcohol beers allow them to do that.” A closer look at the same subject appears in Sustainable Australian Beers: Eco-Friendly Breweries Leading Change. As retailers catch up, we can expect to see more options on shelves. For now, seek out these super-session ales at specialist bottle shops or directly from breweries. Context on how this played out before sits in Chelada Recipe: Authentic Mexican Beer and Lime Drink.

They contain less alcohol, so they may be a better choice for those watching their intake. However, they can still have calories and should be consumed in moderation.
Where can I buy low-alcohol beers?
Major retailers like Ocado and Waitrose stock a selection, and many breweries sell directly. Specialist bottle shops often have a wider range.
