Steps to convert an old wheelbarrow into a flower pot
#1: Clean the truck and remove heavy rust

- I cleaned all the dirt from the surface with a small broom.
- So, I took a wire brush and removed the heavy rust.
- After cleaning all the rusty areas for a while, I couldn't feel my arm anymore, so I threw away the wire brush and decided to continue with a power tool.
#2: Continue with an angle grinder with a wire wheel attached to it

- I took an angle grinder and installed a wire wheel on it, which actually has the same function as the wire brush I used, but is much faster.
- I haven't used the angle grinder, but I got used to it easily.
- Disassembling the truck was not an option, so some parts were difficult to reach.
- That's why I switched to a drill with a 60-grain flap wheel attached to it.
- Also, I used small pieces of 60 grit sandpaper and sanded by hand.
#3: Remove all rust and paint

- After that, I mounted a flap disc on the grinder to remove all the stubborn rust and paint from the wheelbarrow.
- You may notice that the wheelbarrow is very old and warped with lumps all over it, making it very difficult to remove the old paint.
- Using the Dremel multi-tool I was able to get to all the rust covered spots.
#4: Use the rust remover

- Although it happened to meAfter a few hours of grinding and sanding, I couldn't get everything clean, so I decided to use a rust remover.
- He did a good job and had all the rust gone within an hour.
#5: Painting the Wheelbarrow

This led me to the next step: painting!
- First, I applied a coat of white oil-based primer and let it dry for 24 hours.
- I used a combination of a brush for all the corners and a roller for all the large surfaces.
- The next day I applied white oil-based paint, and it covered everything perfectly. A second coat wasn't necessary, so I let it dry completely for 48 hours before doing anything else.
#6: Removing the rusty wheel axle nuts

- Meanwhile I moved towards the wheel.
- The edge had no rust at all, which meant I only needed to remove the paint.
- The axle, nuts and washers were covered in rust, making them stick together. I tried to get them off the shaft, but couldn't, so I sprayed WD40 to loosen them.
- After an hour I was finally able to remove them easily.
- To remove rust from the nuts and washers, I soaked them in rust remover.
#7: Remove paint from the wheel

- The wheel was in very good condition, so this was the easiest step of the entire project.
- I removed the paint from the rim with the Dremel multi-purpose tool and sanded some parts that were difficult to reach by hand.
#8: Painting the wheel

- Once I finished sanding, I went on to paint all the parts of the wheel, except the tire, which I protected with aluminum foil and tape.
- Then, usefulI used white metal spray paint and applied 2 coats total.
#9: Assemble the Wheelbarrow

- The next day I assembled the wheelbarrow. Here, I just needed to mount the wheel on the wheelbarrow with keys. Unfortunately, I scrapped some of the paint with the wrenches, so I spray painted those parts again.
- To bring the tire back to life, I rubbed it with a combination of sugar and water. I was surprised at how well the tire turned out.
#10: Plant petunias in the wheelbarrow

- Now that I'm done with the assembly, I mowed the grass and found the perfect spot for the wheelbarrow. Then, I filled it with soil and finally planted some red petunias in the wheelbarrow.
Here, I want to point out that I didn't make any drainage holes because the wheelbarrow actually has small gaps in the corners that I assume were there from the creation of the wheelbarrow.
#11: Final Result

- This means I'm done with this project. Although this was my first restoration, I really like how it turned out. I learned a lot in the process and gave my patio a simple update.
Remember that you can easily convert an old wheelbarrow into a flower pot in the comfort of your home.
