DIY Windows for Stained Glass, I have some very boring windows that provide no privacy, but I need to provide privacy for our fish tank house.
Buying a stained glass door is expensive and getting a new one is foolish when our door is in good condition.
So I tried in vain to look up someone else's project to fake tinned glass and followed up with some not-so-convenient ideas that involved a lot of work and products I couldn't find in my area.
So here is my quick and easy project for privacy stained glass.
Step 1: Materials

- A rule
- A sharpi marker or any old permanent marker
- Fabric paint
- Metallic acrylic paint
- A foam brush
- Paper plate
- A stained glass pattern (I obviously hand-copied mine from an internet search for "stained glass patterns")
To start, clean your window. It can be any glass window. I made this on GLASS, not plexiglass, so I only know this works on glass.
(Don't be afraid! I already did this once and cleaned it with soap and water 5 months after I painted it.
So it's perfect for renters or people who are committed). Get your sketch.
Step 2: Pattern

- For this next step remember that perfection is not necessary. It needs to look good, but I never worry about exact measurements. Transfer the lines from your sketch to the window using your ruler (or other narrow edge) and your sharpi. Or transfer your pattern freehand. My first window pattern was freehand. This pattern simply needs a narrow border.
- The sharpi can be easily erased with a paper towel and water if it gets messy, so again, don't worry. The paint will cover the sharpi so you won't see it.
- I'm painting inside, so I also use the sharpi on the inside.
Step 3: Paint!

- So I first tried using plain black acrylic paint and a brush, but found it to be a messy and time-consuming process. I found fabric paint that we all remember using on sweatshirts in the '90s and realized how easy it could be and discovered that it was.
- So trace your sharpi lines with fabric paint to simulate and imitate stained glass. Let dry.
- The label says to wait 4 hours, but my window took about 1 hour to dry. Depending on the temperature. But make sure it's really dry!
Step 4: More paint

- So now it's time to paint. Using a foam brush and a paper plate palate, paint your metallic acrylic paints however you like. Again, we're inside, stay inside the lines now!
- I used metallic acrylic paints for two reasons.
- Firstly, it looks more authentically like stained glass and secondly, it provides more privacy.
- Metallic properties have a two-way mirror effect when used in this way. They reflect light when a person is looking in, therefore blocking any view inward and not reflecting light for the person inside. Letting us see who is outside our door.
- You can use any technique you like, but making wavy stripes and stains will falsely enhance your stained glass.
- Let dry.
