Having hanging pots can save a lot of space, whether inside or outside your home, and the best thing is that they are easy to make.
I'll show you how to quickly learn how to make wooden links to hang pots together.
The pieces are simple, and the size and design of your hanging garden is unlimited!
Steps to make hanging pots
Step 1: More about supplies

Tools you need to make your own hanging planters:
- Redwood (ideal for outdoor climate) – .5″x 2″ x 6′
- 4 to 6 feet of rope or wire to hang your project.
- 8 Generic Terracotta Pots. 5″ diameter at the top. Optional to paint them if you want!
- Band saw (in green above) or compact saw.
- A drill to drill holes in the largest plank of wood.
- Optional: Wood finish (any type, see photo for my recommendation), cheap brush.
- A positive attitude! (you'll love how easy this is!)
Step 2: Measuring the wood

Alright, let's party:
First, let's measure and draw the lines to cut the lengths of wood.
Once cut, you should have one 2-foot piece and four 1-foot pieces (see photo of finished wood products)
Steps:
- Take your wooden board and measure 2 feet. Draw a line through the wood.
- Then measure and draw another foot from that line.
- Continue drawing 1-foot lines from there for a total of four 1-foot sections.
- Draw a small circle on the ends of the larger 2-foot section. This is for winding the rope and hanging it later.
Step 3: Draw the hooks that hold the pots

Okay, now let's draw the "hooks" on the wood that hold the pots.
THIS PROJECT DOES NOT REQUIRE PRECISION!
Take a look at the pattern. See the picture of how the lip of the pot rests on the wood. The wood has an incredible amount of weight, take a look at the final hanging garden and you'll see what I mean.
Don't forget to draw and drill two holes in your 2-foot section of wood planks. This is to hang from above. All other small plank sections connect to the main main piece, they will not need their own holes.
Step 4: Cut that wood!

Let's cut!
WEAR PROTECTIVE GLASSES, A MASK AND KEEP YOUR HANDS AWAY FROM THE BLADE.
Cut following the lines you have drawn. In the end, you should have 5 separate pieces of wood.
Optional – Stain that wood, paint those pots!

You could be done, but why not get it dirty with a little finish? Buy a spray can and a brush and stain your wood.a.
Then let the stain remain for 5 minutes and then clean it.
It will be dry to the touch within an hour and completely dry in 4 to 24 hours.
Finally the stain will also protect the wood from the weather since it is petroleum based.
Painting the pots is also a great idea.
It is best to do this before inserting your plants/soil. 1 can of spray paint is more than enough to paint 8 pots.
I got a can of paint + primer, I chose 'krylon bright red'. Painting in a pot will also help retain moisture to prevent plants from drying out!
Step 5: Hang and Add Plants!

- Pot for your plants.
- Hang your largest wooden plank.
- Hang the pots on the board.
- Repeat until you run out of pots, plants or planks.
- Water everything with the hose!
