How to Make an Articulated Lamp, I had some pieces of laminated oak that I had rescued from a chair made by a popular Swedish store. I also had an old lamp that once broke some time ago.

The tools I used were:

• Table saw
• Sander
• Drill
• Hand carver
• And some basic tools that almost everyone has.

This could have been done without power tools with more time but similar results have been achieved.

Step 1: Measure, Cut and Drill

I decided on the desired width of the arms for the lamp and placed the fence of the table saw 20mm from the blade to make my cuts.

I took my time passing these through the blade, as the ends were curved and the saw needed to be lifted at these points.

Onto the drill press where I clamped the paired arm pieces and drilled with a 6mm drill bit ready to receive the M6 bolts and wing nuts on the two elbow joints for final assembly.

Once everything was complete I took the pieces that would make up the base for the lamp from a part of a pine door that had been left over from a previous project that I have not covered but that I may document at some point.

I squared off the ends and ripped out the details that made up the door panels.

Two smaller pieces were cut to the same width as the oak arms. One for the top of the lamp and the other I thought I could use for the bottom, but in the end I didn't need it.

Step 2: Glue, clamp and sand

Once I had jointed the edges of the feet for a perfect fit with a hand shaper, I then applied glue and pressed together the two pieces that will later form the foot.

While the glue was preparing, I took the pieces of oak that make up the arm and began sanding all the pieces and shaping the ends to match the curved ends that the chair arms had.

Waiting for some time, the glue dried and time to remove the remains of the original finish from the two parts that make up the feet.

I then place a chamfered edge using my shaper on the top of both parts to soften the look and I quite like the simple look of this.

Step 3: Clamp for the upper arm and more glue

I then took one of the small pieces to provide a clamp for the top of the lamp.

I plan the depth of this to make the oak arms and sand it to replicate the curve at the end of the oaks.

Glue and clamps applied to this part.

Now comes another round of glue for the feet, I just looked at the placement of the top piece which looks centered and further back to provide more stability to the lamp.

Step 4: Mortise and apply finish

After a small snack. I took the foot and bottom of the lamp arm and marked where I would need to wet it to receive them.

On the hole punch to drill most of the material to the desired depth for easy chiseling. Chisel and hammer in hand.

Then I started removing and squaring up the mortise.

Then I drilled more holes for the lamp wires through the foot and three more in the arms.

I cleaned all the parts ready to receive two coats of Danish oil. A liberal coat was applied.

Then I waited 15 minutes forWipe off the excess waiting 3 hours, which I think is a long time and I repeated this process for the last layer.

Step 5: Assemble and deliver

Once everything was dry after a night in my shed, my son and I assembled it using the two M6 bolts and wing nuts, the cord was passed through the pre-drilled holes, the lampshade was adjusted and plugged in.

It's time to pose a little with your hard work and time to take it to its final resting place for moms to enjoy.
