Procedure:

Shopping list:

• 5 – 2x8 at 10 feet long
• 1 – 2x4 at 4 feet long (you could also use scrap 2x8s)
• 1 – 2x2 at 4 feet long
• 1 – 1×2 @ 10 feet long
• 4 – 1x4 at 8 feet long
• 1 – 1/4" plywood at 33" x 30" (for repellent loads, use 1/2" or 3/4" plywood)
• 1 – Camp Foam Pad, Medium to Firm, 72" x 30"
• 6 – 8" long screws, long drill bit for pre-drilling
• 2-3/4" self-tapping wood screws (about 25)
• 2 sets of hinges (one must be sturdy)
• 1 handle
• 1 1/4 inch of finished nails
• 1-1/4" pocket hole screws
• 2-1/2" pocket hole screws
• Elmer's Wood Glue
• Elmer's Wood Filler
• 120 grit sandpaper

Cut List:

• 6 – 2×8 @ 30” – checkered fronts/backs
• 8 – 2x8 @ 36" - frame sides
• 4 – 2×4 @ 13" - bottom frame corners
• 2 – 2×2 @ 26" - bottom frame staples
• 1 – 1/4" plywood at 33" x 30" (for repellent loads, use 1/2" or 3/4" plywood)
• 2 – 1×2 @ 30" – top bottom frame pieces
• 2 – 1×2 @ 26-1/2" - bottom frame batten slats
• 5 – 1x4 @ 29-1/2" - Bottom Frame Slats
• 6 – 1×4 @ 30" – top frame slats

Step 1:

Make two complete frames from 2x8s, joining corners with 1-1/2" pocket holes and 2-1/2" pocket hole screws.

Step 2 Instructions:

Stack the frames on top and secure them in the corners with 2x4s. Raise 2x4s so there is a 3/4" gap at the top and bottom.

TIP: 1x material is 3/4" thick and can be used as a spacer.

Step 3 Instructions:

Attach 2x2 studs between 2x4s with 2-3/4" self-tapping screws and glue.

Step 4 Instructions:

Flip project over.

Cut the plywood panel with a circular saw or table saw.

Screw to 2x4s bottoms.

Step 5 Instructions:

Turn around to the back.

Place 1x2s on top of 2x4s.

Nail and glue with 1-1/4" brads (you can also use 1-1/4" screws)

Step 6 Instructions:

Build the slat top as shown, attach with 1-1/4" fasteners and glue.

Make sure the frame is square (I built mine inside the chair frame to make sure it was square).

Step 7 Instructions:

1×2 frame hinge.

This completes the structure of the lower frame. Set aside.

Step 8 Instructions:

Attach the remaining 2x8s frame to the corners with pocket holes.

Pile on top. Drill holes with a long drill bit and countersink 8" screws to join the two frames together, two screws per side.

Step 9 Instructions:

Attach slats to frame with 3/4" holes and 1-1/4" screws.

Step 10 Instructions:

Hinge the two frames together with the heavy duty hinge.

Step 11:

Add a handle on the back.
