Today you will learn how to make a modern wooden table lamp in a practical and easy way with us. This is a modern looking decorative table lamp, made of wood (cedar), 5cm diameter acrylic bar and a steel base.

Steps to make a modern wooden table lamp

#1: Necessary materials and tools

For this project I used some materials that I already had and others that I had to buy.
The cost of this project depends on where you get these materials, like if you can buy used material or salvage parts, then that could be a nice money saver.

Materials:

• Acrylic cane 1′ 1/2 – 2′ (about 5 cm) in diameter and long according to your design.
• Wooden square approximately 5'x5" long, depending on the design of the project OR the length of the acrylic cylinder/rod you will be using.
• Thick Plexiglass (5-7mm) – You can take this from an old LCD monitor, they are expensive to buy.
• LED lights: I took it from an LED bulb and modified it to fit the light.
• Wires
• Polyurethane wood glue
• Screws
• Heat sink
• L-shaped steel bar.

Tools needed:

Table saw, bevel saw, drill, front drill bit, router, zip ties, screwdriver, welding gun, hot glue, black spray paint...

#2: Drill the core of the trunk

• The first step, one of the biggest challenges, using the front drill bit, is to drill the core of the wood piece in the center without deviating. (You can cut it later, if yours is not square) 1. look at the picture.
• You will need to use a front drill bit that is the same diameter as the acrylic rod.
• I used a table saw and rested the drill on the rip fence to slide it.
• You need to fit the front drill bit with the extender (already on the drill) in the center of the wooden log and then measure the space between the guide and the drill and the base and the drill and then cut some shims with the same measurements.
• This way your drill can slide in a straight line.
• Firmly hold the piece of wood along the cutting guide with clamps.
• Start drilling with low torque and not very high speed. This will prevent the arm from twisting and breaking, should it stop immediately in the wood while drilling.
• With the speed low, you also avoid "burning" your main bit. Cool the drill bit in water after approximately every centimeter of drilling.
• Drill the length you need according to the length of the acrylic rod or the design of the lamp.
• After that, you can cut the leg if necessary so that the piece of wood is square. Use table saw.

#3: Side openings

• You can make any design and be as creative as you can.
• I decided to go with three openings at the top and two openings at the bottom.
• I chose a 30 degree angle and the cut you make on the beveled sliding saw. It must be sliding so that it makes the cut equally on each end.
• Adjusts thedepth of cut on the saw.

#4: Three-layer wooden plexiglass sandwich

From the piece of wood, cut three slices twice the thickness of the plexiglass.

Then, using a table saw, cut three equal-sized squares from the plexiglass.

Sandwich all the wood and plexiglass slices together, secure them with a clamp and using the same diameter as the rod, drill through all of them in the center with a hole saw.

After that, you need to scrape the entire circular edge of the plexiglass with a cutting knife.

This will make the edge smoother.

After that, with a small torch you should glaze the edges of the circle by not keeping the flame in the same place for too long.

You need to do this so that the light can dissipate better.

Regarding the outer edges of the plexiglass, you should sand them with sandpaper. Start with 100 grits, then 120, and finish with 150. Don't go with higher grits because you don't want the edges to look light.

#5: Join the wood and plexiglass together

• Before joining the wood and plexiglass, be sure to sand and finish the wood surface.
• I have used 80 and 100 grit sandpaper to sand the wood with an orbital sander. Then you can use any wood oil to finish.
• Cut a piece of wood the same thickness as the side openings at a 30-degree angle.
• I used sticky sandpaper to sand the end of the openings.
• I decided to use polyurethane wood glue to join the pieces.
• It is a new product on the market and is very strong and useful as you can use it to glue wood with almost any other material.
• It is slightly expandable and you don't want to apply too much as it will come over the edges.
• You're still going to get some of it out, but clean it off just before it dries completely with the thinner.
• In my case, I had to apply a small layer of glue and wait for the wood to absorb it (the wood was cedar, which means it is very absorbent) and then apply another layer so that the glue sticks to the plexiglass.
• Before putting all the pieces together, make sure to place the acrylic rod inside the wood and then glue the pieces together.
• In my case, I had to leave the last piece (wooden bottom) to glue later because I had to insert the LED diffuser between the wood and the plexiglass.
• Use large clamps to hold parts tight for 2-4 hours. Then remove them and let the glue dry for 24 hours.

#6: Prepare/modify the LED light

• I took the led light from an LED bulb. First I removed the diffuser and then cut the wires, and removed the two screws.
• The electronic led driver will be launched. I opened the controller and removed the white silicone to expose the wires and make it smaller.
• I decided to cut the heatsink in half as it was too thick and would have taken up too much space on the base of the light.
• I used a non-ferrous blade to cut it in half after securing it to a piece of wood with a screw.
• I also needed to cut the heatsink on the sides because it was too big.
• Connect new, longer wires to the LED, and then secure the LED to the heat sink using two screws.

#7: Building the Base

• I wanted to make a heavy and sturdy base, but I didn't want to be wooden, so I chose an L-shaped steel bar to make that.
• Cut the four pieces at 45 degrees with a grinder using a cutting wheel. Firmly secure the steel bar on a workbench with clamps, and use another piece of flat bar as a guide to help you make straight cuts.
• If you have a fixed steel saw, it would be ideal for perfect cuts.
• Join the pieces by welding them. Weld all outer corners, grind and polish them with a sandpaper disc.
• Then place the light on top of the base, center it, and mark the edges of the light on the steel base.
• Use a step drill or drill bit to drill two small holes on each side of the steel bar.
• Next: Paint the steel with black flat spray paint.

#8: Connect the base and install the LED

• Attach the base to the wooden light using very small screws to prevent the wood from cracking. Do not use very long screws that reach into the plexiglass.
• After that, you need to install the LED. Center the led light with the diffuser, drill a hole in the heat sink and place the heat sink on the wood.
• Use a new plug and cord with a switch on it. Solder the wires and install caps to insulate the wires.

#9: Finished
