Steps to make a wood carving:

• Okay, first I made the design I wanted to carve, in this case a stylized insignia and inscription
• I printed this (A3) and attached it with PVA adhesive to my dead tree piece that I had planed flat(ish)
• Then I clamped this to my easel and pulled out my trusty Router
• I used a small bit sunk drill bit at about 5mm
• You need a relatively stable hand for this

• It is best to have a bit of practice on some scrap as this can be a bit finicky, if you are doing relatively fine detail then it helps to 'take off' at the end of the cuts
• Blow off the sawdust often so you can see what you are doing.

Step 3: Keep going!

• This design took me about an hour to dismantle, and my back was killing me afterwards. Try using a bench at a comfortable height instead of being a little dirty like me and making it too low!
• When finished, sand until all excess paper is removed
• I also embedded a wrench and a cabinet key plus a coin in this one

Step 4: Add Paint or Epoxy

• In this case, I chose the various parts in different colored enamel paint and put the key, etc. in 2 pack clear epoxy, others I just mix some paint with epoxy and squeegee and then sand when dry

Step 5: Apply the finish

• The display plate had 2 coats of stain and polyurethane varnish, the two fish were filled with 2 part epoxy with a little black enamel in the mix, sanded and then oiled when outside, I re-oil once a year
