Green Party Anti-Zionism Motion Threatens Jewish Identity 2026

The Green Party's anti-Zionism motion is igniting fierce debate over Jewish identity and racism, as critics warn it could lead to the expulsion of Jewish members for simply practicing their faith. The motion, set to be debated at the party conference this weekend, declares that Zionism should be treated as racism, a move that has sparked outrage among Jewish communities and raised serious questions about the party's commitment to inclusivity.

What the Motion Means for Jewish Members

If passed, the motion would become official party policy, equating Zionism—the belief in a Jewish homeland—with racism. Given that the Green Party does not admit members of self-described racist organizations, this could mean that members of Zionist organizations, including almost every synagogue and synagogue movement in Britain and worldwide, would be expelled. For many Jews, this is not just a political stance but an attack on their very identity.

The author, who plans to say Kaddish (the mourner's prayer) for his father this week, fears that this simple act could be construed as racist under the new policy. "It sounds hyperbolic," he writes, "but the warning comes from Green party activists opposed to the resolution." This highlights the deep anxiety within the Jewish community that their religious practices could be criminalized by a party that claims to champion social justice.

The Political Fallout and Green Party's Rise

The Green Party has recently seen a surge in popularity, beating Labour in a byelection in February and hoping to win Keir Starmer's former seat of Holborn and St Pancras next Thursday. However, the anti-Zionism row has cast a shadow over leader Zack Polanski's campaign. If the party loses the seat, many will interpret it as a sign that the Green surge is over. The controversy has also intensified internal divisions, with some members warning that the motion could alienate Jewish voters and undermine the party's progressive credentials.

Why This Matters Beyond Party Politics

This debate is not just about internal party rules; it touches on fundamental questions of identity, free speech, and the definition of racism. For Jewish communities, Zionism is an integral part of their heritage and religious practice. Equating it with racism is not only offensive but also dangerous, as it could legitimize discrimination against Jews. The Green Party's motion risks turning a blind eye to actual racism while targeting a marginalized group.

• Jewish identity under threat: The motion could make Jewish religious practices, like saying Kaddish, grounds for expulsion.
• Political consequences: The controversy may cost the Greens votes and damage their progressive image.
• Definition of racism: Critics argue the motion misuses the term "racism" and undermines the fight against real discrimination.
• Community impact: Jewish members feel targeted and alienated by a party they once supported.
