Building a Modern Platform Bed! 2026

Building a modern/minimalist style Modern Platform Bed with a built-in LED light in the headboard. The entire bed was built using easy to find materials, some of the materials can also be found on Amazon.

Materials:

• (3) 8 foot long pine 2x10
• (17) Pine 2×4 8 feet long
• (1) 4'x8' sheet of plywood
• (1) 2’x4′ Acrylic Sheet
• LED light
• White spray paint
• Watco Dark Walnut Danish Oil

Tools:

• Table saw
• Circular saw
• Saw (Miter Saw)
• Drill
• Kreg Jig Tool

Step 1: Make the platform framework:

1. Rip both rounded edges of the 2x10 on the table saw. at 81/4 inches wide, very good measurements for the platform that surrounds the entire bed.
2. Tear the rounded edges of 5 of the 2x4s to a width of 3 inches.
3. Tear one of the 3-inch-wide 2x4s in half. This piece will be used for the top stretcher that connects the 2x10 frame.
4. Cut the top stretcher to 2x10 and length on the miter saw. The side deck planks are 80 1/2 inches long. The foot platform plank and top stretcher are 60 1/2 inches long.
5. Use a planer to smooth all boards and size them to a uniform thickness. This step can be skipped if you do not have a brush.
6. Add 5 evenly spaced pocket holes to the bottom ends of the bottom platform stretcher. Add 1 pocket hole to the bottom side ends of the thin top stretcher.
7. Hold the top of the bottom deck stretcher toward a flat surface perpendicular to the joint side deck board. Use a square, make sure everything is at 90 degrees, and secure it with 5 pocket hole screws. Repeat this step for the opposite side.
8. Attach the thin top stretcher in the same way with 1 pocket screw on each side. At this point it may probably spin around a bit, but don't worry, it will become rigid once you add the 2x4 support structure.
9. (4) 2x4s Cut up to 3 inches to an even thickness, and glue together. It will be much more difficult to sand everything later when it is assembled, it is preferable to do it at this point.
10. Place the first 2x4 along the inside of the side deck 2x10 piece with the 1 1/2-inch face down. (See photo for correct location).
11. Place the 2x4 joint perpendicular to the first board and mark the outside edge on the first board. This will show you exactly how long to cut this piece.
12. Make the cut on the miter saw and replace it on the bottom of the platform. Move along the platform until you have marked and cut all 4 sides.
13. Add pocket holes to the 2x4s spaced approximately every 8 inches along the length, and two holes at the joining ends of the top and bottom stretchers.
14. Attach the 2x4s with pocket screws.
15. The framework structure is now complete. It should be straight and rigid now. Turn the plcover the entire deck up and sand all joints flush. Sand the entire deck with 220 grit.

Step 2: Make the header

3/4 inch plywood headboard (Purchased at Home Depot). Any plywood headboard you like will do.

1. Cut the headboard to 75 1/4″ x 34 1/2″.
2. Cut a 3″ x 6″ notch at the bottom ends to match the shape of the platform where it will be attached.
3. Cut a 3/4″ slot down the length of the short end of each headboard frame piece. This will allow the frame to sit flush.
4. Cut a 3/4″ channel down the middle of the length of the headboard top frame piece. This is the channel in which the LED lights will be placed.
5. I used a slotted piece on the router table to cut a slot about 1/8″ from the edge of the channel. This slot should match the thickness of the acrylic sheet with room for the lights to slide smoothly.
6. The cheapest option was to use a smaller sheet of acrylic and cut 4 strip lights spanning the length of the light channel.
7. Add a light coat of white spray paint to one side of the acrylic strips. This will diffuse the light enough so that individual lights are not visible.
8. Peel off the adhesive and stick the lights inside the channel. Run a light strip along both inside edges, and press firmly.
9. You will have to make some kind of end cap to close the channel. See the photos to see how to make one.
10. Make a hole large enough for the light cord to pass through.
11. Now it's time to install the header frame. Measure how long each piece should be and cut to fit the miter saw. Attach to headboard with wood glue and nails.

Step 3: Make the legs (or just buy 6″ bed legs)

You can buy some legs or make your own.

1. Rip the 4x4 down to 3x3 on the table saw.
2. Place a 5″ x 5″ piece of pine on the topior with wood screws. This will allow you to attach your feet to the bed.
3. Apply a dark walnut Danish oil finish.
4. Place the rubber feet on the bottom of the 4 legs.

Step 4: Assembling and Completion

1. Attach to corners with wood screws.
2. Cut a 2x4 in half, and these two halves will serve as the slats that the support slats will rest on to support the mattress.
3. Cut the studs to size and place them flush with the bottom of the bed frame on each side. Use lots of screws as this holds the mattress and whoever is on it.
4. Apply Danish oil finish to entire bed.
5. Attach the legs to the four corners of the bottom of the frame with wood screws.
6. Mount the headboard to the frame by matching the slots you cut earlier with the platform. The headboard should rest on the platform, and the plywood should butt up against the back. Fasten with two screws at each end of the platform and add 6 more screws along the bottom of the back, as shown.
7. Use 2x4s as slats and cut them to fit between the slats. Use at least 9 2x4s and space them evenly.
8. Add a mattress and you're done!
