Cool Magic Wooden Wallet, sure kids might be attracted by your magic trick and will surely want to play with your wallet (full of money)!

Step 1: The project

The design of this wallet is not original, but it belonged to a simple trick in some magician's box of my youth.

The operating principles are similar to the operation of Jacob's ladder.

I drew a simple 3D diagram to show you how to connect the ribbons that hold the money.

Please note that although in 3D and animation you see a gap between the two plates, in reality the tapes are very tight and keep the plates adjacent.

Step 2: Prototypes

Before making the wallet out of wood, I wanted to experiment with the correct side to manage some bills.

So I cut some rectangular pieces of cardboard and connected them with tape.

I discovered that for 80x100 mm banknotes it is enough.

You can see the strange way the tape holds the cardboard plates together, but also allows the wallet to open.

Step 3: The (very) rough material

I know, it's strange, but I wanted to experiment to get something good out of a couple of wooden boards I had.

Because these boards are very weak in the direction perpendicular to the wood grain, we need to glue two boards with different grain orientation.

This solution is well suited to connecting tapes.

In fact, we will insert the ends of the ribbons between the two boards. You can make this wallet with any rigid material, plastic, cardboard, thin metal, leather, etc.

Step 4: Draw and cut

After drawing the 80x100 mm rectangles on the wooden plates, since they are very thin, we can cut them with large scissors.

Step 5: The tapes

As ribbons you can use any material. I opted for a clear plastic sheet, even though the wallet would work better with a non-elastic material.

So if you have a nice fabric ribbon, I suggest you try that.

I cut the center belt a little longer than the other two, this is just a matter of appearance, so you can cut all three pieces from the same ribbon.

Step 6: Gluing the tapes

You have to glue the ends of the tapes to the outside of the interior plates. Use a cyanoacrylate glue, so it will be very fast and strong.

To decide the correct length of the belts, stretch them tightly and make the plates correspond to each other, then glue the ends.

Step 7: The trick is ready

It's the turn of the central belt.

This is a little difficult to insert into position, but after gluing the first end you will have no difficulty stretching it and gluing the opposite end to the outside of the wood plate.

The trick is now ready to try if you want!

Step 8: The magic

Attach the other two rectangular pieces to the outside sides of the first pair of boards with vinyl glue.

Then put everything under a weight, some heavy books are good.

Wait a few hours, maybe allthe night to let everything dry.

Step 9: Sand

Now is the time to think to beautify our creation. Let's start by sanding the wooden surfaces with fine sandpaper.

In the same way, let us rectify the borders, let us pay attention not to ruin the belts.

Step 10: A little makeup

A little wax will make our wallet much smoother and with better value.

Treat internal and external surfaces, and open the wallet both ways to reach hidden areas.

Step 11: Finishing

If you are not satisfied with the light wax treatment, you can darken the wood with a colored oil. I made the external faces dark, to avoid staining the money.

Step 12: Ready

Watching the animation, you will see how the wallet can be opened from both sides.

The real trick is not shown here, and consists of the following procedure:

• Place the bundle of bills (not too much, please send me the excess!) inside the wallet, on the ribbon or ribbons, on one side.
• Close the wallet, paying attention that all bills are within the borders
• Open the wallet again, but this time from the opposite side
• All bills are now magically held by the ribbons as in the photos

If you are good enough to not let your audience understand that the wallet can be opened from two sides, they will hardly believe that you are so quick to insert the money under the ribbons!

Step 3: Time to fill it!

Now your magic wooden wallet is ready!

Be careful not to give it full of money to experience the trick, in fact, I can imagine that it will become a wallet with the ability to disappear money!
