On this occasion we will show you how to make a Flarinet clarinet in an easy and practical way using PVC tubes.
I have been a clarinetist for years and I love teaching music to children.
But I've found that clarinets can be really expensive, not as easy to play, and quite fragile for younger children.
So I started with a simple membrane aerophone design and optimized it so that it could be made simply from everyday materials you would find at the hardware store.
The Flarinet mouthpiece (as I call it) is super versatile and allows you to play amazing clarinet sounds when you connect it to 1/2 inch PVC pipe.
You can easily experiment by cutting new lengths of tubing and drilling 3/8 holes to customize your own Flarinet.
Steps on how to make a Flarinet clarinet
Step 1: Gather Materials and Tools

For the Flarinet mouthpiece you will need these materials:
- 6″x6″ sheet of 1/16 inch cork board
- 2 #20 standard O-rings
- PVC pipe – 2 Feet of 1/2″
- PVC pipe – 1 Foot of 1″
- 1 Inch PVC Pipe Coupling
- 1/2 inch PVC pipe coupling
- 5/16 aluminum tube
- Transparent packing tape
- 8.5″ x 11″ transparency layer
Tools:
- Drill
- 5/16 and 3/8 drill bits
- Rule
- Knife
- Hand saw
- Sandpaper # 240
Step 2: Measure and cut the inner chamber of the nozzle to length

Cut a 4-inch section of the 1/2-inch PVC pipe with the handsaw.
Be careful to make the cut as perpendicular to the pipe access as possible.
Carefully sand the cut end when finished.
Step 3: Measure and cut cork sheets

Cut a rectangle from your 6x6 sheet of cork that measures 2 3/16 inches long.
Cut three strips from this rectangle, two 1/4 inch wide and one 3/4 inch wide.
Step 4: Placement of the cork and placement of the O-ring

Using the 1/2-inch 1/2-inch PVC pipe, mark the following distances from one end as shown in the image above.
- 1 5/16 inches
- 2 7/16 inches
- 1 9/16 inches
- 2 9/16 inches
- 1 11/16 inches
- 2 13/16 inches
Step 5: Locate the O-rings and glue cork sheets

Apply a thin layer of contact cement to the three sections of the PVC pipe shown above.
Also apply a thin layer of contact cement to each cork strip.
Roll both Standard #20 Orings so that they are between the contact cement rings.
Wait 10 minutes and then carefully roll over the cork strips so that the contact cement meets the contact cement and the surfaces create a strong bond.
The cork strips should hold the O-rings in place as shown in the image above.
Step 6: Measure and cut the outer chamber of the nozzle

Using the hand saw, cut a 3-inch section of the 1 in the PVC pipe.
Carefully sand the cut with #240 sandpaper.
Step 7: Drilling Nozzle Intake

Mark a point on the 1 3-inch length of the PVC pipe 1 3/16 inches from the end.
Using the 5/16 drill bit, drill a hole through the PVC pipe being careful to go only through one side.
Step 8: Measure and Cut the Sealing Ring

Using the remaining 1-inch PVC pipe, measure and cut a small ring 1/8 inch long.
Step 9: Create mouthpiece cover

Take the 1/8 inch long PVC ring and insert it into the 1 inch PVC coupling.
Press the ring until it stops by the inner lip on the coupling. You can use PVC pipe larger than 1 inch to push the ring.
You have now completed the inner and outer chambers of the nozzle as well as the nozzle caps!
Step 10: Make the Circular Cane

Place a layer of tape about 3 inches long over the transparency.
Using the outer nozzle chamber, trace its outer circumference.
Cut out the resulting circle with a pair of scissors, making sure to cut inside the traced circle. Now you have a Flarinet reed!
Step 11: Make the nozzle tube

Cut a 1-inch length of 5/16 aluminum tubing. Sand the edges to remove any burrs and insert into the outer chamber of the nozzle.
The aluminum tube must fit snugly and not protrude from the inner wall of the nozzle chamber.
Wrap the exposed end of the mouthpiece tube with blue tape to make it comfortable to play.
Step 12: Assemble the Clarinet

Take the circular reed and insert it into the mouthpiece cap.
The reed should sit flush against the small pvc ring we inserted into the pvc coupling above. Insert the outer mouthpiece chamber into the mouthpiece cap so that the hole is just beyond the end of the mouthpiece cap.
Finally, insert the inner chamber of the mouthpiece into the outer chamber until it touches the circular tab as shown above.
The mouthpiece tube should be located just above the top cork strip.
Using a 1/2 PVC coupling, attach the nipple to the remaining section of 1/2 PVC pipe. Your Flarinet is now ready to play!
Step 13: Tuning and playing the clarinet

Remember that you can make a clarinet using different measurements.

Tune the Flarinet by experimenting with the pressure that the internal chamber of the mouthpiece puts on the circular reed.
You will get a warmer sound and a sturdier instrument the closer the inner chamber of the mouthpiece is to the circular reed. Ideally, the inner chamber of the nozzle protrudes just above the outer chamber of the nozzle.
Blow into the mouthpiece tube and gently pull the mouthpiece cap until Flarinet makes its first note. Now that you have a working Flarinet mouthpiece, play the band!
Take any 1/2 inch pvc pipe, drill holes in different sizes and locations, and make up your own tools!
