Ideas for Modifying a Wine Barrel into a Campfire, this article will show you how to convert an old wine barrel into a wood-burning stove. After not finding the exact stove we wanted to buy, I chose to build one as a gift for my wife.

Tools/Equipment needed:
- Sander
- 60/80 and 120/150 grit sandpaper
- Rag
- Wood paint
- Metal fire pit
- Wine barrel
Step 1: Get your wine barrel

As you can see from the photos, it needs a little work!
Step 2: Sand

I first started with 40 grit but there was too much damage so I switched to 60 grit and then 80 grit which worked great. After that, I moved on to 120 grit and finally 150 grit for a final quick sand to smooth everything out.
Step 3: Staining time

WEAR GLOVES!
Apply paint the easiest way.
- Lightly grind a small piece of the rag piece (1″ X 1″) that has been folded several times onto the surface and hold for a second.
- Remove the cloth.
- Rub the rag lightly and quickly over the wood that needs painting. Follow the grain of the wood. that is, in the barrel inside it would be up and down on each side of the barrel.
- As you progress, try to keep the darkness of the stain at a similar level. After 10-15 minutes rub the barrel with a clean rag to remove excess paint. (don't worry about stains on the metal bands).
- Sand your metal bands
Sand all metal strips with an 80/100 grit to remove any rust/excess stains.
Step 5: Place the fire pit on the barrel lid

Remove the fire pit from the packaging and place the bowl portion, grate and cover over the wine barrel. There you have it, an amazing fire pit made easily.
The only thing I would change are the metal bands. I would probably paint them black to match the fire pit cover. Other than that, it works very well.
Now it's time to toast some marshmallows!
Note: When you have your first fire, you may see some smoke rising from the basin of the fire pit (like I did). This is not the barrel burning, it is the moisture vapor in the wood itself. After the first burn I have not seen her again. I removed the bowl and dried it afterwards to prevent rust underneath.
