The meningitis B vaccine should be offered to all teenagers across the UK on the NHS, according to a new recommendation from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI). This follows a series of fatal outbreaks in recent months, including a cluster in Kent linked to a Canterbury nightclub that killed two people and left over a dozen hospitalized.
What the JCVI Recommends
The JCVI advises that young people become eligible for the menB vaccine at age 15, with catch-up programs for those who missed it as infants. Specifically, the committee recommends a booster jab for those who received the menB jab as a baby, with the first cohort turning 15 in 2030. Children who missed the infant dose will be offered two doses.

Key Details of the Proposal
- Booster dose for teens who had the vaccine as infants, starting with those turning 15 in 2030.
- Two doses for children born on or before April 30, 2015, who were not offered the vaccine as babies.
- A one-off vaccination campaign this summer for around one million young people heading to university or residential education.
Why This Matters: Recent Outbreaks
In March, a major outbreak in Kent linked to a nightclub caused two deaths and numerous hospitalizations. A similar outbreak in Berkshire in May led to the death of a school student. These incidents underscore the serious risk of invasive meningococcal disease, which the JCVI chair Prof. Wei Shen Lim described as “rare but very serious.”
Comparison of Vaccination Strategies
| Age Group | Current NHS Offer | Proposed New Offer |
|---|---|---|
| Infants (born after 2015) | MenB vaccine at 8 weeks, 16 weeks, and 1 year | Booster at age 15 |
| Teens (born before May 2015) | No routine offer | Two doses at age 15 |
| University-bound young people | Limited campaign in 2025 | One-off catch-up campaign |
What This Means for Families
Parents of teenagers should watch for updates from the NHS regarding eligibility. The JCVI has worked closely with meningitis charities, considering the experiences of families who lost loved ones. Vaccination remains the best defense against this life-threatening infection.
