Ukraine's new army chief Mykhailo Drapatyi has vowed to step up counteroffensive actions, marking a shift in strategy as Kyiv seeks to regain momentum in the war. The announcement came shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reshuffled top military personnel, including the appointment of Drapatyi as commander-in-chief. This development coincides with ongoing EU efforts to finalize a 21st package of sanctions against Russia, though critics warn the bloc's sanctions policy is reaching its limits.
New Leadership Aims to Intensity Counteroffensive
Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, 43, takes command at a critical juncture. Zelenskyy tasked the armed forces with accelerating offensive operations, particularly against Russian logistics hubs. In a statement, Drapatyi emphasized the need for modern tactics and better coordination to exploit vulnerabilities in enemy supply lines. The shift follows a series of Russian advances in eastern Ukraine, making Drapatyi's role pivotal in turning the tide.

EU Sanctions Package Faces Hurdles
While Ukraine pushes forward militarily, EU ambassadors are locked in negotiations over the latest sanctions round. Several member states, including Hungary, have pushed back against proposed measures targeting energy and technology exports. Critics argue that the bloc's sanctions policy is losing effectiveness as Russia adapts. A key point of contention is the inclusion of a ban on Russian liquefied natural gas, which some countries deem economically damaging.
| Sanctions Round | Key Measures | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 21st Package | Ban on LNG imports, expanded technology restrictions | Under negotiation |
| 20th Package | Diamond embargo, tighter oil price cap | Adopted |
| 19th Package | Export controls on drones and electronics | Implemented |
