Jacob Rees-Mogg Clashes with Tucker Carlson Over Hitler Remarks 2026

In a startling interview at his home, former Tory minister Jacob Rees-Mogg accused US rightwinger Tucker Carlson of 'verging on defending Hitler' during a debate that has ignited fierce controversy. The encounter, filmed for Carlson's podcast, saw the host repeatedly suggest the West provoked Russian aggression and question why Britain fought Hitler in World War II.

The Heated Exchange: Rees-Mogg vs. Carlson

Rees-Mogg, who lost his parliamentary seat in 2024, invited Carlson for an interview as part of his post-politics career as a commentator. The discussion quickly turned heated when Carlson challenged the UK's role in WWII, asking: 'Who cares?' about the prospect of Britain losing to Hitler. Rees-Mogg responded firmly: 'Otherwise we'll be speaking German.'

Carlson, known for his sympathetic stance toward Russia and his interview with Vladimir Putin, repeatedly goaded Rees-Mogg over the small size of the UK armed forces and suggested Russia was more powerful. Rees-Mogg countered by pointing out the UK's larger economy and argued for supporting Ukraine to deter Russian aggression.

Key Moments from the Interview

• Carlson questioned why Britain entered WWII, claiming Germany had a legitimate claim over parts of Poland.
• Rees-Mogg defended Britain's decision to fight Hitler, emphasizing the importance of opposing tyranny.
• Carlson suggested the West was to blame for inviting Russian aggression.
• Rees-Mogg highlighted the UK's economic strength compared to Russia.

Background: Carlson's Controversial Stance

Tucker Carlson set up his show after leaving Fox News and losing faith with Donald Trump, largely citing Trump's willingness to engage in foreign wars. Carlson has taken a sympathetic position towards Russia over Ukraine and has interviewed Putin, drawing criticism from many quarters.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, a former cabinet minister, has transitioned into media, often appearing as a commentator. His decision to host Carlson has raised eyebrows, given Carlson's controversial views.

Comparison of UK and Russian Military and Economic Power

While Russia has a larger military, the UK's economy is significantly bigger, a point Rees-Mogg emphasized during the debate.

Reactions and Implications

The interview has sparked widespread reactions, with many criticizing Carlson's remarks as historically insensitive. Rees-Mogg's accusation that Carlson was 'verging on defending Hitler' underscores the gravity of the exchange. This incident highlights the ongoing divide in Western perspectives on Russia and historical narratives.

As the war in Ukraine continues, such debates are likely to intensify, with figures like Carlson and Rees-Mogg at the center of the storm.
