French Beekeepers Furious Over Lifting of Pesticides Ban 2026

The recent decision by French parliament to reauthorize two banned pesticides, acetamiprid and flupyradifurone, has sparked fury among French beekeepers and environmentalists. This move threatens bee populations already stressed by climate change and habitat loss. Beekeepers call the decision 'scandalous, irrational and irresponsible.'

Why Beekeepers Are Outraged

Beekeepers like Carolyn Bouguet from Essonne expressed deep frustration, noting that bee populations have already been compromised by climate change, new parasites, and loss of habitat. Henri Clément, spokesperson for the French beekeeping association UNAF, described the measure as 'an absolute disaster for our sector and for biodiversity as a whole.' The reauthorization allows France’s food and environmental safety agency, Anses, to grant waivers for using these pesticides in struggling farm sectors under exceptional circumstances.

Scientific Evidence of Harm

Scientific studies have established that acetamiprid, a neonicotinoid with powerful neurotoxic effects, can poison bees, affecting their foraging capacity and memory. A 2024 study suggested flupyradifurone could be lethal to some honeybees. The following table compares the two pesticides:

Key Takeaways

• French parliament reauthorized two banned pesticides despite scientific evidence of harm to bees.
• Beekeepers and environmental groups like Greenpeace France condemn the decision as a disgrace.
• The pesticides are allowed in the EU but were banned in France until now.
• Farmers claim waivers are needed to combat aphid-borne diseases in sugar beet, apples, hazelnuts, and cherries.
• France’s environment minister resigned in protest over the legislation.

FAQ

The decision has drawn widespread condemnation, with Greenpeace France accusing the government of 'trampling on science, health, the environment, and the clear will of the people.' The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between agricultural productivity and environmental protection.
