Making a bicycle rack with 1 sheet of wood is an interesting idea to keep all the bicycles in your garage organized. This DIY project is easy to do and will allow you to keep order in your garage.
We leave you the plans so you can see all the measurements: SketchUp file.
How to build your own bicycle rack with 1 sheet of wood
This is something we have needed for a long time, because the living room has looked like a garage with all the bikes placed everywhere. It's nice to finally have an attractive bike rack to hold a bike and all the gear. Then let's get started!
Materials:
- 1 Sheet of 4×8 plywood
Step 1: Cut the plywood

- We only need 1 piece of plywood for this project! Let's go ahead and rip this on the table saw into 3 pieces that will become the top, bottom, and all the dividers.
- This week we actually have a free set of plans for this build with the cut list and layout, so you can see that here!
Step 2: Cut the pieces to size for the dividers

- Then going to the miter saw, we're taking one of those pieces and breaking it down into each divider. We need 5 of them. Three of those five pieces should be a little shorter than the other two because they won't go all the way to the floor like the other two. This is shown in more detail in the plans here.
- Sometimes it tears when cutting plywood on a miter saw, especially one that slips when pulled back. so if you only cut a very small amount, which is the top veneer first, then cut the whole thing off, you won't tear off the top.
- These boards were a little long for the miter saw, but they weren't so long where we had to flip the board, we can simply lift the board up a little to complete the cut. Feel free to try this, but only if you feel comfortable.
- It's always a good idea to use a stop block when making repeated cuts, just to save you time measuring.
Step 3: Cut the top and bottom to length

- Now we need to grab the next board and cut it to size for the top. We also have to break it in half so that the bike rests in the middle.
- This board here was actually too wide to make the cut, so we had to flip it completely over, line it up as perfectly as possible, and finish it.
Step 4: Drill Pocket Holes

- Starting with the bottom piece, we will be mortising this into the side pieces, so we are going to drill those pocket holes here and in the 5 dividers, but only on one side of these.
- As you can see, we have the spacers on the sides, and this just helps keep the board flat and keep the pocket holes in a straight line. This just does thelife much easier.
Step 5: Make a cutout for the bicycle wheels

- We need to make a cut for the bike wheels to sit on, so we are using our drill press for this, but you can totally use a drill. Here's a quick tip! When drilling these holes with a stronger bit, more often than not you will come out the back with ugly splinters. To avoid this, first drill a small hole through the board.
- Make sure the hole is where you want the center of the largest hole to be. Then get your strongest drill bit, start drilling the hole just a little bit, maybe 3/8″. Then, turn the board over, align the stronger bit to the small hole you drilled earlier, and finish the hole. No splinters!
- After the holes were made, we used the jigsaw to cut the rest.
Step 6: Assemble

- We went ahead and sanded everything before everything was ready.
- Now we can go ahead and start assembling. We have the top boards facing down on the workbench because we are attaching the side pieces and dividers with pocket holes in the top.
- After the center piece is screwed into place, we measure halfway up one of the openings, then half of 3/4″ is 3/8″, so we come to 3/8″ to our right, made a line and now we can place the boards with the cutouts to the left of the line so they are centered in the opening.
- We are also placing all of the pocket holes facing one direction, so in one view you won't be able to see any.
- Now just for the bottom piece. We put a piece of wood against the two sides, which is the same size as the middle dividers, so that the bottom piece can rest on them while we screw it into place.
- We also need to screw the bottom piece into the dividers and we just used a countersunk drill bit and regular wood screws for this.
- We also need to attach the bottom to the dividers from the center of the board, so we are lining up the square with the screw we already screwed into place, going up 8″ which is the center of it and starting there. This is so that all the screws are in exactly the same place and we know they are perfectly centered on the splitter.
- We added a small piece to the bottom of the shelf, in the middle so that it rests on the floor and does not sink.
Step 7: Finish and Result!

All that's left is to finish and you know we just have to use the varnish to keep your bike rack with 1 sheet of wood.
