Step 1: Find a Log

While camping, I took a quick trip into the woods to find a dead log suitable for this project. I wanted this register to have a similar diameter to my wrist with some interesting knots that could be useful for supporting the watch, as we will see later.

Step 2: Cut the trunk

Once the log was found, I cut it perpendicular to its length. The straighter this cut is, the better, as it ensures that the stand will rest vertically when finished. After making this 90° cut, I moved a few inches down the trunk and cut it at an angle.

Step 3: Cleaning the trunk

Once the trunk was cut, I removed the bark and dark "skin" with a knife. This took some time, but I felt that using the knife instead of sandpaper made the wood look more natural and gave it a more hand-crafted look.

Step 4: Drill the disc loading hole

I selected the ideal location on the trunk to make cutouts for the Apple Watch charging disc. If the disc is placed right on top of some small knots, these knots can be used to help support the weight of the watch. Although the magnetic disc is strong enough to support the watch vertically, I found that it doesn't hurt to have a little extra support. After selecting the location for the loading disc, I drilled a 1″ diameter hole to a depth of 5/16″ with a face bit. Ideally I would use a 1 1/8″, but I didn't have one on hand. If you use a 1 1/8″ drill bit, step 5 can be avoided.

Step 5: Enlarge the disc hole

Since I used an undersized drill bit for the disc hole, I had to enlarge it to fit the disc. I used a sanding drum and my rotary tool for this.

Step 6: Drill a slot for the USB cable

Two 5/16″ holes were drilled at an angle from the bottom of the disc hole through the center of the base (the flat end of the log). These holes must be drilled directly next to each other so that they can connect to form a slot. I moved the drill bit back and forth to connect the holes and form this slot to fit the USB end of the charging cable.

Step 7: Cut a small grove for the cord

It is necessary to cut a small grove between the USB slot and the front of the base so that the drive cable fits when the drive is placed in its hole. I used a 5/16″ bit and my rotary tool to cut this grove. I wanted the grove to be as close to the face of the mount as possible and I also wanted it to be fairly deep so that it wouldn't cause it to bend the cable coming out of the disc.

Step 8: Drill the Magnet Hole

As the disc is slightly magnetic on the back, I decided to place a small magnet behind it to help keep the disc in place. I drilled a 5/8″ hole to a depth of 1/4″ in the center of the larger disc hole.

Step 9: Drill Hole for the Dowel

Since I only have one charging disk, I didn't want to permanently mount it on the stand (for those times when I travel and need to take it with me). To facilitate disc removal, a pin will be inserted through the register behind the disc. Pressing on the exposed end of the pin will push the disc out of the holder. I drilled a 25/64″ hole directly through the log for this peg.

Step 10: Cut the Dowel and Add the Screw

A 3/8″ dowel was cut to 1 7/8″ in length and one end was drilled to fit a flat head screw. This screw helps hold the magnet behind the loading disc. When the dowel fits into the prepared hole, the end of the dowel without the screw should protrude from the back of the log.

Step 11: Add magnets to the bottom of the base

Since I use my steel toolbox as my nightstand, I wanted to add magnets to the bottom of the trunk to allow the entire dock to attach securely to the toolbox, while still being easily removable. I drilled two 5/8″ holes to a depth of 1/4″ in the bottom of the base and placed two magnets in them.

Step 12: Put the disc in the holder

The magnet fits into the hole provided for it behind the disc. It will snap into place on the screw at the end of the dowel. I had to make sure I placed the correct side of the magnet towards the puck as it will only latch onto the puck on one side. The USB cable is then threaded through the trunk and the disk is pressed into position over the magnet.

Step 13: Widen the crack for the cable

The cable escapes from the bottom of the trunk through a small crack that connects the hole in the bottom of the base and the back of the trunk. I had to slightly enlarge this crack by cutting it with a knife.

Step 14: Carve the shelf for the clock

I carved a narrow lip under the dial to help support the watch when charging. The two small knots located here also help support the watch.

Step 15: Hole for a pen

As a final touch, I drilled a 1/2″ diameter hole in the angled top of the bracket to a depth of 2 5/8″. This hole serves as a pencil or pen.

Step 16: Apply oil

I applied Danish oil to the support for a finish. You can also use any varnish or finish, but I wanted to try oil as it promised to create a beautiful finish much quicker and easier. I was not disappointed.

Step 17: We are done

I was super pleased with the outcome of this project. It was simple, fast and works as expected. It attaches securely to my toolbox with the magnets on the base and provides a convenient holder for my pencil when I'm not using it. Oh, and charge the Apple Watch in a perfect side position.
