Today I will teach you how to make a custom gaming desk in an easy way and in simple steps, which you can do yourself.
I got tired of seeing all your typical desks out there. They were all rectangular, never fit right, and just weren't right for me.
I decided to break out and build my own desk.
Note that this won't save you much money, so if you're looking to save money, this might not be the solution for you (unless you have large amounts of steel fittings and 3/4" steel pipe around your house. Let's get started.

- 3×2″ steel threaded pipe (3/4″ diameter)
- 5×4″ flange (for 3/4″ pipe)

- 5×18″ steel threaded pipe (3/4″ diameter) * Adjust for desk height
- 4 Caps (to fit 3/4″ tube)
- 1 Sheet of 3/4″ red oak plywood (get a good piece, free of so many defects and with a good grain)

Tools:
- Sierra
- Drill
- Level
- Painter's tape
- Pencil
- Palm sander
- Finish/Clear Coat

Steps to build a custom gaming desk:
#1: Mounting the supports

- This part can be a little difficult to get down. You will need to assemble the legs completely before you start assembling the rest. Steel and iron can be a little slippery, but they fit perfectly.
You will need 2 legs from top to bottom:
- Flange
- 6″ steel tube
- T connectors
- 18″ steel pipe
You will need 2 more legs from top to bottom:
- Flange
- 2″ steel tube
- T connectors
- 1″ steel tube
- 18″ steel pipe
Finally the Cross Member:
- 24" steel pipe
- T connectors
- 24″ steel pipe
Coming out from the top of the crossbar along the back will be a 2″ steel pipe and flange.
The first image is of the first legs described with the rest of the frame mostly assembled in the second image.
#2: Cut the desktop

- Be sure to draw them lightly or be prepared to lightly sand off the extra. You can also draw on the bottom surface. My preference was to look into the eyes where I would have to draw and place.
- This also helped prevent the plywood from splitting as I cut it.
- Once drawn, you'll want to use your saw very carefully and follow your lines to cut out the shape of your desk.
- Now that you have a cut-out desk surface as seen in the photos above, you will want to sand the edges to ensure a smooth surface to attach the veneer strip to.
- Be very gentle when using the palm sander and do not stay in one place for too long. Just smooth it out enough so that there are no unnatural ridges or bumps.
- To apply the veneer you will need an iron. If you are using a good iron for your shirts, you will want to place a layer of aluminum foil over the heating element to protect it from the veneer glue.
- Put your iron on the lowest setting and let it heat up (away from the wood). Once it's hot, pick a spot, usually along the back of the desk, and start placing the strip along the edge with the glue side facing the desk.
- Apply the pHeat boat gently until glue melts.
- Once it has melted, move the iron slowly across the sheet metal, holding it gently with your other hand so you can align it correctly.
- The glue only takes a short period of time to begin to set, keeping the veneer firmly glued to the edge of the desk.
- Continue moving around the edge of the table, paying attention to the curved corners as they are difficult to move, but luckily the edge is thin enough for the iron to smooth out to make the curve.
- Continue all this around the table until you are back where you started.
- The trick now is not to heat the glue and adhere it to the final point until you have no choice. I would recommend a sharp set of shears to cut off this excess.
- Mark where you need to cut with a pencil and cut the strip. Iron the end of the strip as if you had the rest.
- Once the glue dries (I would wait a couple of hours), you'll want to make sure the edges are sanded so there is a smooth transition between the plywood and the veneer (again, don't sand too much because it's not very thick).
#3: Staining the desk

- You will want to make sure to clean the surface very well with a tack cloth and canned air or a blower.
- Also make sure there are as few particles in the air as possible.
- Choose the stain and color you are looking for.
- I used a walnut finish for mine. I also applied 3 coats, but be sure to follow the directions on the can of any stain you choose for best results.
- The same goes for the clear coat.
- I went with a satin because I didn't want a glossy shiny finish.
#4: Assembly and Placement
Remember that you can make a personalized gaming desk with the measurements you want.

- The fun part is finally here. Your desktop will be ready to go.
- You will want to make sure that you place the desk surface on a soft surface so that the top surface is facing down.
- Center the frame you added in step 1 and secure it with 3/4″ tapered screws.
- Once connected, it's time to move it into the room and start setting up your glorious battle station.
- The pipes provide great support for the monitors and are positioned to give a minimalist look while also providing great support.
- You can also use the tubes for cable management and cable ties. I have other ideas about how to hide those cables, but I haven't done them yet.
