Transform salvaged materials into a charming DIY swing glider for your garden. Using old loft structures, shutter remnants, various profiles, and plumbing pipes, you can create a unique and sturdy outdoor swing. This project is perfect for adding a personal touch to your outdoor patio furniture collection.
DIY Swing Glider – The Project

From demolishing an old loft, we salvaged numerous T-shaped tubes with a wide leg of 25mm and length of 35mm, and wings 15mm wide and 4mm thick. This section combines rigidity and lightness, making it ideal for building a robust support for a DIY garden swing.
Materials Needed
- T-shaped square tube 55×39 mm: 4 pieces at 2070 mm; 1 at 1800 mm.
- Square tube 10x30x2 mm: 4 pieces at 1490 mm, 2 at 528 mm; 2 at 550 mm; 2 at 388 mm; 2 at 230 mm.
- Flat iron: 2 pieces at 5x25x230; 4 at 5x60x25 mm; 8 at 5x50x20mm; 8 at 5x40x100 mm; 4 at 3x20x1200 mm.
- 4 sheet metal discs Ø 90×3 mm.
- 1 round iron Ø 8×1490 mm.
- 4 ball bearings Ø 12-21 mm.
- 2 fir planks 30x200x450 mm.
- 1 fir plank 30x200x240 mm.
- Various pieces of 3/8", 1/2", and 3/4" plumbing pipes.
- Bolts, screws, nuts in appropriate sizes and quantities.
- Wooden slats for shutters.
The Support Structure
The design follows the classic pattern of a horizontal crossbar supported by two inverted V-shaped trestles. Total height is approximately 1820 mm; length is about 1800 mm, and the feet of each trestle are spaced about 2100 mm apart. Each leg is a T-tube of 2070 mm with ends cut at 60° (cutting through the T's leg). A 90 mm diameter disc of 3 mm sheet metal is welded to the base of each piece.
At the top of each piece, two holes are drilled axially through the T: one 10 mm hole, parallel to the cut and thus diagonal, 20 mm from the end; the second 8 mm hole, perpendicular to the bar, 32 mm from the first. The crossbar is 1800 mm long with squared ends. The T's leg has 6 holes: 2 of 10 mm, centered 20 mm from the ends; the others, 8 mm, follow with spacing of 209, 658, 276, 408, and 209 mm. The two 10 mm holes, matching those drilled diagonally in the legs, allow an M10x150 mm bolt to pass through, joining the three pieces.
The joint is reinforced by a 5x25x230 mm flat iron fork and 5x25x60 mm plates, visible in the photo, secured by M8x55 mm bolts. For a complete home improvement project, ensure you have all necessary hardware from your local shop.
The Seats
For the seating, use the fir planks and wooden slats. Sand them smooth and apply a weather-resistant finish to ensure durability. You can customize the seat size to fit your comfort. Consider adding cushions for extra coziness, available in our outdoor decor collection.
Assembly Tips
- Pre-drill all holes to prevent wood splitting.
- Use stainless steel hardware for outdoor longevity.
- Apply a protective sealant to all metal parts to prevent rust.
- Test the swing's stability before regular use.
