Learn Easy How to Make a Leather Bag, it can be used to carry books, as a purse or for groceries or any other use you can think of. Due to the bottom seam, it can also stand upright. It's a bag that should last a lifetime.

#1: Materials for the leather bag
Materials:
- Leather. Please see the image with measurements so you know how much you need. (A basic rawhide or wooden mallet)
- Basic leather tools.
- A hard surface, ideally a slab of marble or granite.
- Clamps
- Ruler and other necessary tools
- Scissors, razor blades and ruler
- Leather glue
- Puncher
- Spray bottle for wet leather
- Small rivets and a rivet
- 2 Metal Clasps (that clip onto the bag for a long strap – I used two lobster swivel clasps)
- Needles for sewing leather, waxed thread or tendon
- Pliers: sometimes needed when pulling the needle through the holes
- Awl, needed to punch holes in leather for sewing
- Sewing wheel, to make holes where they will be used for sewing, this forms a channel along the edge to prepare it for sewing.

#2: Cut and prepare to sew the sides

The first thing you will have to do is cut the leather, according to the measurements. Of course, you can change the measurements and size to fit your preferences.
The bag you are creating here is quite deep and does not have a medium sized capacity inside. I like that you can set it up and it stays vertical.
Cut to size, take the main piece and spray the edges to wet them. Next, take the folding tool and make a line down all the edges, including the top and bottom (it looks better to be consistent with all the edges).
Take the stitch cutting tool and use it on the edges of the bag along the sides (the long sides you are going to sew). This will cut a groove in the material to make it a little thinner and easier to sew.
#3: Sew the sides of the bag

After using the folding and slotting tool on the sides, you will need to remove the leather glue. Turn the bagMake it "upside down" and then re-wet the leather on the edges. Use the folding and grooving tool on the wrong side of the leather.
It may not work as well as the finished side, but it will be good enough. Then use the sewing wheel to create slits where you will sew the stitches.
Apply a thin layer of glue along all edges that will be sewn together; the bag should still be upside down. Let the glue dry slightly and become tacky before sealing the edges.
Add some heavy objects along the edges to really tie them together. Wait a while, maybe 30 minutes to an hour before you plan to sew the edges.
To sew along those edges, you will need to use your awl to make holes in the leather where you are going to sew. Normally people would use a leather sewing horse to help hold the leather while sewing, but I don't have one.
So I had several cutting mats under my leather and used them to punch holes in the sides to prepare for sewing; I did it with the punch and sometimes I had to use the mallet to push it in.
Punch the holes, it's ready to sew. It is very difficult to explain how to sew leather correctly. If I could do something different on this tote bag, I would have used a neutral colored thread to sew the seams on the inside.
If you prepared the area for sewing, it shouldn't be too difficult to sew the side seams. If your holes were drilled, you should be fine. Be very careful not to hurt yourself when sewing. I used a very sharp needle.
#4: Finish the bottom of the bag

Next, you'll want to remove that bag from the right side. This is not the easiest task, but it is doable. 🙂
You will need to prepare the bottom side edges for sewing. See the image for a detailed understanding of this process.
Basically, you'll prepare it the same way you did for the side edges.
You'll start by wetting the leather and then use the folding tool, slotter, and stitch wheel. Then glue the pieces together, clamp and let dry.
Use the awl to make holes and then you can sew the edges.
#5: Adding small straps to the bag

Now it's time to add the small straps. Please look at the pictures so you know where I used the folding and grooving tool to get some of the leather out for stitching. First I made a line about an inch from the end of the strap.
I did it on each end of the strap. Then 3/8 inch in, I made another line. And 3/8 inch from the sides and bottom I made lines with the folding tool and then the slotting tool to remove some leather for sewing.
Please note: If you get sick of stitching, you can always use quick rivets to attach these straps.
In the next step we will use quick rivets for the long strap; skip that step if you decide to go that route to join these asace. Anyway, I don't mind the homemade look with the natural dots on the small handles.
The ends of the small strips are prepared, you will want to place them in the bag with glue.
This one is approximately 3 1/2 inches from the side seam. The ends of the strap were about 3 1/2-4 inches apart on the same side of the bag (hope that makes sense).
The glue is almost dry, you can use the awl to carefully pierce the ends of the strap and the leather (be careful not to pierce through both sides of the bag) and then sew as you did in the previous steps.
#6: Attaching the long strap to the bag

Take out the long strap and wet the ends with the spray bottle. Also take out your metal fasteners or clips (I used the swivel alligator clips), as well as some rivets (I used small quick rivets that I bought at a leather store).
Snap the metal through the piece of leather (see image) and fold the leather, so there is about an inch of extra leather from the fold to the end.
Find the center of that piece that is folded and use the punch to punch a hole through the two pieces. Then take out your rivets and place one where you made the hole (see pictures). Once this is done, repeat on the other end of the long strap.
This step should be quick and easy, especially if you use small quick rivets. Then, your strap is complete.
Now make sure you have two small strips of leather ready. Use a very small hole punch to make a hole in the ends of each piece (again, see pictures for full explanation or understanding).
Use the same size hole punch to punch holes in the side of the bag, about an inch from the top of the bag and 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the side seam.
You will attach quick rivets here as well. Please refer to the pictures the rest of the way while you finish attaching the small pieces of leather to the sides of the bag. This step is quick and easy, but not so easy to explain in writing here. So please refer to the photos and also feel free to ask me any questions in the comments section below.
All you have to do is place those long clips in the bag and you're finally done! Your beautiful and simple leather bag is complete! It should last you a lifetime!
