If you like to keep your plants tidy or you are an aquaponics lover, then this PVC Aquaponics project will be perfect for you.
I've always been a fan of aquaponic gardening ever since I saw something on Facebook about it.
The almost closed loop (or at least the possibility of a closed loop system) is very interesting.
Of course, once I saw a vertical hydroponic system, I immediately wanted one.
Being the frugal DIY guy that I am, I didn't want to pay the almost $1000 for one more, I didn't like the way it looked. So I made my own.

Materials to build a PVC aquaponics:
- A wooden flower pot or any style you want to keep water.
- Also a 5″x5″x8 white vinyl fence post
- A top cap for the fence post.
- 1 elbow and 3/4″ PVC pipe to connect the pump hose.
- Plastic sheet to line the inside of the pot.
- 16 3″ 45 Degree PVC Elbows
- 1 3″ PVC pipe
- Fountain pump – I used a 320GPH but it depends on your needs
- Grow lights – I have 2 Sun Blaster CFL’s. one 4 feet, one 3 feet.
- Timer for both lights and pump.
- Posts to fix the lights. I'm using bamboo poles that I found there.
- Some wire to keep the posts in place
- Wood to cover the plastic on top of the planter and act as a clamp for the wire holding lights.
- Rock for cultivation.
- Rock wool cubes for plants and act as a filter.
Step 1: Preparing the Tower

Cut the 5x5 fence post to your desired length. I made mine about 6 feet, as there were square holes in each end of the post for it to attach to other fencing parts. I chose the best side that would be in the water and allow the fish to swim through the pole.
Measure how far apart you want your holes for the plant supports to be (3″ elbow at 45 degrees) and then scale them on each side. I used a 3″ hole saw and started my first hole about 3″ from the top of the planter box and the next hole 12″ from the first.
For plant holders I wanted to use the rock as my medium, so I needed a tray to connect the elbow to each side. I measured between the elbows when they were inserted into the fence post and cut the 3″ PVC pipe accordingly. I then cut a section of those pieces, using a saw, to open them up and allow them to fit into the elbow. Drill 4 holes in the center of each piece in a cross shape to allow water to drain at a constant rate. This led to some testing to determine how many holes to drill so that the water would drain quickly enough.
At the top, I drilled a 3/4″ hole in the center of the fence post and used an elbow and 3/4″ pvc pipe for the pump to send water to the top planter.
Step 2: Preparing the Box

There happened to be some polyethylene sheeting left over from another project, so I used that to line the wooden box. I did about 3 coats to make sure it didn't leak. I stapled the sheets to the top and trimmed off any excess. I cut 4 pieces of wood to cover the plastic and to use as a clamp for the cable holding the light poles. For the cable I simply cut some hangers and bent them into a loop and at 90 degree angles.
As you can see in the photos, I used the bamboo poles to secure the tower in place and prevent it from falling over. He just centered the tower, measured the space between the tower and the inside of the box, and cut the posts to fit.
Step 3: Putting it all together

With everything prepared, I put it all together, filled the box with water, the elbow and tube with stone and rock wool, and connected the pump to the 3/4″ hole at the top. I cut the bamboo sticks to length and connected the lights with twist ties.
After some testing and getting the water cycle (waiting for bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrites and then nitrates), I added my fish and planted some seeds. Remember that you can build a PVC aquaponics using the measurements you think are necessary.
