Christmas is all about happy moments and creating memories to be cherished forever, especially for little children who await this prestigious day all year long. I believe the whole family should make sure the children have the most fun. They, in no way, should be ignored because that would defy the whole concept of Christmas, at least that is where I stand with this.
Unfortunately in today’s story that is exactly what happened. Reddit user u/Mama_Sparkles shared that her in-laws, especially her MIL, are pretty vocal about how OP and her husband are not good parents and do very little to let them meet their grandchildren. OP shared this was wrong and that she and her husband would make a good amount of effort to make sure the children frequently meet their grandparents.
The MIL did not let go of this and decided to do something that broke OP’s heart. Perhaps to teach them a lesson for being bad parents, or whatever her reason was, MIL planned a trip to Disneyland and took all her grandchildren along except two. You can guess it, they were OP’s children.
OP was super disappointed and didn’t understand why her kids were left behind. The couple decided as their kids were starting to get excited about the Disney universe, they too would take their children on Disney Cruise for Christmas. But the influence of MIL’s actions was so heavy on OP that she had to take the matter to the subreddit “Am I The A$$hole?” to know if taking her children on a vacation for Christmas would make her an AH or not.

1. She said “my kids” so I don’t understand why she got called an AH for deciding something for her kids. Let’s find out.
2. OP and her husband had a great relationship with her in-laws until she became a mother.
3. Due to cultural differences, OP’s MIL has been harshly vocal about how she doesn’t like their parenting style.
4. OP and her husband try their best to make sure the kids get to spend as much time as possible with their grandparents and the houses aren’t too far away either. But that effort just doesn’t get registered in the books of the in-laws.
5. It is nice to see that SIL is making efforts to create happy memories with her kids. Something OP also appreciates.
6. The in-laws know that OP’s children have been slowly sliding into the world of Disney and they love it. OP and her husband had also been planning to take their kids on a Disney cruise for starters.
7. Okay now this is actually disappointing.

8. What is the point of leaving the two grandchildren behind? Are they trying to teach OP a lesson or something?
OP’s children would have had such a mesmerizing experience on that trip. By this act, it feels like the in-laws don’t consider OP’s children as their grandkids. So disappointing. Not sure about the 1.5-year-old but the 3-year-old would feel so hurt when he gets to know about all the fun his cousins had on the trip. This is something the in-laws are completely ignoring just to settle personal scores. And the MIL was criticizing OP and her husband for being bad parents. Sorry but MIL, you are being a terrible grandmother by doing this.

9. OP says the situation has got nothing to do with money as her in-laws are financially well off.

10. She just feels bad that her kids didn’t even get considered. The sadness made her angry and she doesn’t feel like doing anything for Christmas now.
11. OP fears the reaction of her children when they will get to know about how their grandparents ignored them.

12. OP is thinking of taking her kids to Disney cruise anyway on a vacation of their own but doesn’t know if that would make her an AH. So, the matter was taken to the courts of the AITA community.

Here’s what the AITA community had to say about this:
13. Talking always helps clear things out. OP

14. Maybe MIL is trying to show this is what you will get if you don’t let me meet my grandchildren.
15. They decided on a trip for themselves so you can decide one for you and your family.

16. It’s Christmas. If you think it is suitable to take your kids on a trip to Disney, then you do that. Don’t care about what others would say.
