Pope Leo XIV's speeches and writings have been certified as human-authored by an Australian AI detection tool, just weeks after he declared artificial intelligence the greatest threat to humanity. The certification, conducted by Proudly Human, confirms that the collection titled Maps of Hope is entirely human-created, aligning with the pope's call for AI to remain "human-friendly."
How the AI Detection Certification Works
Proudly Human, spearheaded by Australia’s former chief scientist Dr. Alan Finkel, uses a suite of four to five AI detection tools along with a proprietary averaging algorithm. Authors or their representatives must sign up, pass an ID check, and declare that AI was not used to write the first draft or generate sentences. The tools analyze nuances in writing and grammar to verify human origin.

The Role of Pope Leo’s Encyclical
In his first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo warned that AI should be prevented from “dominating humanity” and must remain accessible to all. The certification of Maps of Hope reinforces his commitment to authentic human expression in the face of rising AI capabilities.
| Feature | Human Writing | AI Writing |
|---|---|---|
| Creativity | High, with emotional depth | Formulaic, pattern-based |
| Consistency | Variable by author | Uniform and predictable |
| Grammar Nuances | Personal style, occasional errors | Perfect but sterile |
| Originality | Unique insights | Derived from training data |
Key Takeaways from the Certification
