Australian Swimmer Isaac Cooper Steps Down After Drinking Session 2026

Australian swimmer Isaac Cooper has stepped down from the national team's leadership group after missing the final night of competition at the Commonwealth Games due to a drinking session. The 22-year-old's absence from the closing events and team meeting in Glasgow has sparked controversy and overshadowed Australia's record-breaking performance at the meet.

Cooper, a gold medalist at the 2024 World Championships, was seen drinking while his teammates competed in the final evening at Tollcross International Swimming Centre. Swimming Australia confirmed the incident and stated that Cooper voluntarily stood down from the athlete leadership group, acknowledging that his actions conflicted with team expectations.

What Happened at the Commonwealth Games?

The incident occurred on the last night of the swimming competition in Glasgow. Cooper missed the final session and the subsequent team wrap-up meeting. According to a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, he was observed drinking in the city while his teammates were racing. Swimming Australia's official statement emphasized that his behavior was not in line with the team's values.

Cooper had been a prominent figure in the Australian swimming team, having been used in promotional campaigns for the Games, including participating in the King's Baton Relay at the Great Barrier Reef. His voluntary resignation from the leadership group is a significant development, given his previous indiscretion four years ago when he was sent home from a swim camp for wellbeing challenges.

Impact on Team Morale and Performance

Despite the off-pool distraction, Australia enjoyed a highly successful meet, bringing home a record 37 gold medals. However, Cooper's actions have cast a shadow over the team's achievements. The sanction serves as a reminder of the high standards expected of athletes representing their country.

Cooper's performance in Glasgow was mixed. He withdrew from the 100m backstroke final after qualifying eighth, finished sixth in the 50m backstroke, and swam in the 4x100 medley relay heat, earning a gold medal when his teammates won the final. His teammate Henry Allan has now emerged as Australia's leading male backstroker, finishing fifth in the 50m, just ahead of Cooper.
