Why Does the Census Matter?
The census provides a comprehensive snapshot of Australia's population, informing decisions on health, education, transport, infrastructure, and social services. Data from the census helps allocate billions of dollars in government funding and ensures communities receive the support they need. As national census spokesperson Emily Walter explains, “In order to effectively serve a community, you need to know how many people there are, who they are, and where they are.”
New Questions in the 2026 Census
For the first time, the census will include questions about sexual orientation, sex recorded at birth, and gender. These additions have been praised by experts like Dr. Liz Allen from the Australian National University, who calls it “probably the most progressive census Australia has ever seen.” These questions aim to better understand the diversity of the Australian population and inform inclusive policies.
