Georgia School Shooter Sentencing: Life of Grief for Families 2026

The Georgia school shooter sentencing hearing on Friday left families with a 'life sentence of grief and trauma,' as described by Shayna Aspinwall, whose husband Richard was killed in the Apalachee High School attack. Colt Gray, 16, pleaded guilty to 55 charges including second-degree murder, avoiding a trial but leaving the punishment to Judge Nicholas Primm.

Victim Impact Statements Reveal Deep Trauma

Shayna Aspinwall told the court that her two young daughters will be 'forever marked by his absence.' Breanna Schermerhorn, mother of victim Mason Schermerhorn, said she does not forgive Gray, emphasizing that he alone made the decision to bring a gun and pull the trigger.

The shooting on September 4, 2024, killed teachers Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53, along with students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo, both 14. Another teacher and eight students were wounded, seven by gunfire.

Colt Gray's Plea and Legal Proceedings

Gray's non-negotiated plea meant no sentence was agreed upon, so the court heard summaries from both sides before deciding the penalty for the 55 convictions, including second-degree murder. His father, Colin Gray, was convicted in March on charges including second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter and is set for sentencing next week.
