Barnaby Joyce yelled at his dog during a live ABC interview, creating a viral moment that distracted from tough questions about One Nation and Tommy Robinson. The former deputy prime minister, now a One Nation recruit, appeared on the 7.30 program from his home deck in rural New South Wales. Host Sarah Ferguson pressed him on Pauline Hanson's meeting with far-right convicted criminal Tommy Robinson, but Joyce's reply was interrupted by his own dog, prompting a sharp "SIT DOWN!" outburst.
What Happened During the 7.30 Interview?
Joyce was defending his leader Pauline Hanson's European "working holiday" when Ferguson asked a pointed question: "It seems to me, Barnaby Joyce, that your decision to defect to One Nation is dragging you further into a place of intolerance and racial discrimination." As Joyce began to answer, his dog caught his attention off-screen. He suddenly yelled at the pet, then chuckled, "Sorry. It's the dog." Ferguson pressed on: "Don't worry about the dog. Just answer the question." Joyce snapped back, "Don't be rude. Otherwise, this interview will..." before trailing off.

The Dog-Yelling Distraction
This bizarre exchange shifted focus from the serious allegations about Hanson's association with Tommy Robinson, a far-right activist with a criminal record. Joyce claimed his party did not travel "with a bio on Tommy Robinson" and alleged that Channel Seven's Spotlight program originally suggested the meeting—a claim Seven has repeatedly denied. Ferguson rejected Joyce's defense, noting his deflection through the dog incident.
