The war in Ukraine has left a generation of young men with life-changing injuries, and photojournalist Paula Bronstein's project Blinded by War documents the aftermath of injury with unflinching empathy. Through her lens, we witness the enduring humanity of veterans like Ivan Rozuman and Vitaliy Veres, who navigate blindness, hearing loss, and countless surgeries. This photo essay is not just about trauma—it's about resilience, adaptation, and the quiet courage to rebuild a life after the battlefield.

The Human Cost of Drone Warfare

Modern warfare has introduced a brutal new reality: kamikaze drones that leave survivors with severe facial and sensory injuries. Most of the wounded veterans Bronstein photographs have been hit by these drones, which are used extensively by both sides across the sprawling frontlines. The injuries are catastrophic—eyes destroyed, eardrums ruptured, and shrapnel embedded deep in tissue.

Ivan Rozuman, a former soldier with the 25th Brigade, was first wounded during the Kharkiv offensive in 2022. He has undergone more than 50 operations and still carries countless pieces of shrapnel in his body. After leaving military service, he was caught in an explosion near his home in Zaporizhzhia and almost died. Now blind and with hearing loss, he learns to navigate city streets with a mobility trainer in Lviv.

Adaptive Sports as a Path to Rebuilding Identity

For many veterans, the road to recovery goes beyond medical care. Vitaliy Veres, injured in Bakhmut on 14 February 2023, lost his sight, suffered a torn chin, and had both middle ears destroyed. After more than 30 surgeries, he found purpose in adaptive sports and hopes to become a motivational speaker. He wants to popularize adaptive sports for Ukrainian veterans, showing that life after severe injury can still include competition, camaraderie, and achievement.

Bronstein's work captures these moments of adaptation—veterans learning to use canes, attend workshops, and support each other. The project is a testament to the human spirit's ability to find joy even in the darkest circumstances.

Common injuries Limb loss, penetrating trauma Eye damage, hearing loss, facial trauma
Survival rate after severe injury Lower due to slower evacuation Higher due to advanced medical care
Rehabilitation focus Physical therapy, prosthetics Sensory rehabilitation, adaptive sports
