Chilean-American author Isabel Allende has won Spain's €1m (£843,000) Premio Planeta, one of the world's most lucrative literary prizes, under a pseudonym. The 84-year-old writer received the award on Thursday for her novel La hora antes del alba (The Hour Before Dawn), a sequel to her celebrated 1982 debut, The House of the Spirits.
Isabel Allende Wins Premio Planeta Under Pseudonym
The Premio Planeta, now in its 75th edition, is awarded annually to an unpublished novel. Allende submitted her manuscript under a pseudonym to avoid any bias, and the jury was unaware of her identity until the winner was announced. The prize includes a €1m cash award and a guaranteed publishing contract. Allende said the win felt "like winning the Nobel" and that at her age, "there is very little to lose."

A Sequel to The House of the Spirits
La hora antes del alba returns to the characters of The House of the Spirits, following Alba, the granddaughter of Esteban Trueba and Clara del Valle, as she recovers from imprisonment and torture during Pinochet's dictatorship. Allende stated that this book would bring the universe of The House of the Spirits to a close. The original novel, often read alongside Daughter of Fortune and Portrait in Sepia, is considered part of a loose trilogy of interconnected family sagas.
Parallels with Contemporary Politics
Allende drew parallels between the political circumstances of the novel and the contemporary rise of extremism. She noted that the story's themes of repression and resistance remain relevant today. The award ceremony in Barcelona was attended by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia, highlighting the cultural significance of the prize.
