Tennessee Convicted Murderer Jacob Morley Escapes Prison, Manhunt 2026

A manhunt is underway in Tennessee after convicted murderer Jacob Morley escaped from a state prison on Sunday evening. The 28-year-old fled the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, prompting an urgent search by authorities.

The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) announced Monday that Morley was discovered missing during an emergency headcount around 11:30 p.m. Sunday. Surveillance footage showed him breaching the perimeter fence and escaping in his TDOC uniform.

Who Is Jacob Morley?

Morley was serving a life sentence for the 2022 murder of Cody Birchfield, a Tennessee man who was initially reported missing in February 2022. Birchfield's body was found buried beneath Morley's home about a month later.

In addition to the murder conviction, Morley was also convicted of aggravated burglary, evidence tampering, evading arrest, and vandalism. He is described as 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 240 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair.

Details of the Escape

The escape occurred at the Northwest Correctional Complex, a state prison in Lake County. According to local reports, staff noticed Morley was unaccounted for during a routine count, leading to an emergency headcount that confirmed his absence.

Surveillance footage revealed that Morley breached the perimeter fence, a security breach that raises questions about prison protocols. The TDOC has not released further details on how the breach occurred.

Manhunt and Public Safety

Law enforcement agencies are actively searching for Morley. The TDOC has issued a public warning: "Do not attempt to apprehend this fugitive." Anyone with information on his whereabouts is urged to call (844) 832-3463.

Residents in the area are advised to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The escape poses a significant risk given Morley's violent criminal history.

Comparison of Recent Prison Escapes

Morley's escape comes more than a year after a major jailbreak in New Orleans where 10 detainees escaped, all of whom were later recaptured. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in prison security.

What This Means for Prison Security

This escape raises serious concerns about the effectiveness of security measures at the Northwest Correctional Complex. Breaching a perimeter fence undetected until a headcount suggests potential lapses in surveillance or staffing.

Tennessee officials have not yet commented on whether additional security protocols will be implemented. The TDOC is likely to face scrutiny over how a convicted murderer could escape from a state facility.

What to Watch Next

Authorities are expected to provide updates on the manhunt as the search continues. The public is urged to stay informed through official channels and to report any sightings immediately.

The escape also raises questions about the classification and monitoring of inmates with violent histories. Advocates for prison reform may call for a review of security measures.
