Tourette Syndrome Campaigner John Davidson to Attend Bafta Scotland 2026

Tourette syndrome campaigner John Davidson will attend the Bafta Scotland awards and watch the ceremony from a separate relaxed space, following an independent review into accessibility and safeguarding. The move comes after Davidson's outburst at the British Academy film awards in February, which sparked a crisis for Bafta and the BBC.

Bafta's Improved Safeguarding and Inclusion Measures

In a letter to Bafta members on Thursday, chair Sara Putt and CEO Jane Millichip announced that Bafta had strengthened and centralised safeguarding, risk assessment, and compliance processes. The organisation consulted with safeguarding and inclusion experts to make arrangements for Davidson's attendance at the Bafta Scotland awards ceremony in November.

According to the letter, Davidson suggested watching the ceremony via video link from a separate relaxed space within the venue, accompanied by his family and friends. This approach aims to ensure a comfortable and inclusive experience for all attendees.

I Swear: A Leading Contender at Bafta Scotland Awards

I Swear, the film based on Davidson's life, leads the nominations with seven nods at the Bafta Scotland awards. The film received all three nominations in the best film actor category for Peter Mullan, Robert Aramayo, and Scott Ellis Watson, as well as a best film actress nomination for Shirley Henderson.

Robert Aramayo unexpectedly won best actor at the national Bafta film awards in February. As executive producer of I Swear, Davidson had been in attendance at that event, where his vocal outburst drew widespread attention.

Understanding Relaxed Spaces at Awards Ceremonies

Relaxed spaces are designed to provide a calm environment for individuals who may find traditional ceremonies overwhelming. These spaces often include softer lighting, reduced noise, and the freedom to move around. Bafta's decision to offer this option reflects a growing trend in the entertainment industry to prioritise accessibility.
