US veterans have greater levels of PFAS in their blood than civilians, according to a new study from Brown University. The peer-reviewed research found that many military veterans carry significantly higher burdens of these “forever chemicals,” raising urgent questions about the long-term health risks faced by service members.

The study, which analyzed federal health data, is the first to directly compare PFAS blood levels between veterans and non-veterans. It found that the problem is especially pronounced among younger veterans, with those aged 20–39 showing PFAS concentrations 13% to 24% higher than their civilian counterparts, depending on the specific compound measured.

What Are PFAS and Why Are Veterans at Risk?

PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) are a group of man-made chemicals used in a wide range of products, from non-stick cookware to waterproof clothing. They are dubbed “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment or the human body.

For military personnel, the primary exposure route has been firefighting foam used during training exercises and emergency responses. These foams, known as AFFF (aqueous film-forming foam), contain high levels of PFAS and have contaminated groundwater, surface water, and soil around many military bases across the United States.

“There is some amount of urgency here,” said the study’s lead author. “My hope is that this might accelerate the conversations that the government and military need to have about protecting our service members.”

Key Findings: Younger Veterans Most Affected

The Brown University-led analysis revealed that the disparity is concentrated among younger veterans. According to the study:

  • An estimated 23 million veterans ages 20–39 have PFAS blood levels 13–24% higher than non-veterans.
  • Younger veterans were 18% more likely than young non-veterans to exceed the threshold at which experts recommend medical monitoring.
  • About 13 million veterans in this age group (58%) are above the threshold set by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.

These findings underscore the need for targeted health screenings and policy interventions for those who served.

PFAS Blood Levels: Veterans vs. Civilians

The table below summarizes the key comparisons from the study:

Group Average PFAS Level Increase Percentage Above Monitoring Threshold
Veterans aged 20–39 13–24% higher than civilians 58%
Non-veterans aged 20–39 Baseline Lower than veterans
Older veterans (40+) Not significantly different Similar to civilians

This data highlights that younger veterans are disproportionately affected, likely due to more recent exposures at contaminated bases.

Health Risks of PFAS Exposure

PFAS exposure has been linked to a range of serious health conditions, including:

  • Certain cancers (e.g., kidney, testicular)
  • Thyroid disease
  • High cholesterol
  • Liver damage
  • Immune system suppression
  • Reproductive and developmental problems

For veterans, these risks add to the already significant health challenges they may face after service. The study’s authors emphasize that early detection and monitoring are critical.

What Veterans Can Do

If you are a veteran concerned about PFAS exposure, consider the following steps:

  • Consult your healthcare provider about PFAS blood testing.
  • Stay informed about PFAS contamination at bases where you served.
  • Participate in veteran health registries and studies.
  • Advocate for stronger regulations and cleanup efforts.

Additionally, the VA has begun to recognize certain conditions related to PFAS exposure for disability benefits. It’s important to document your service history and any potential exposures.

FAQ

What are PFAS and why are they called forever chemicals?

PFAS are man-made chemicals used in various industrial and consumer products. They are called “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the environment or the human body, leading to accumulation over time.

How can veterans reduce their PFAS exposure?

Veterans can reduce exposure by avoiding contaminated water sources, using water filters certified to remove PFAS, and following advisories from local health authorities. Regular blood testing and medical monitoring are also recommended.

Are there VA benefits for PFAS-related health issues?

The VA has started to recognize certain conditions linked to PFAS exposure for disability compensation. Veterans should file claims and provide evidence of service-related exposure. Consulting a veterans service officer can help navigate the process.

The study’s findings serve as a wake-up call for both the military and policymakers. As research continues, it is crucial that veterans receive the support and care they need to address the hidden toll of their service.
