Modern and functional, this DIY wall lamp could bear the signature of a trendy designer. We make it using perforated sheet metal, wood, and plexiglass. The lamp has a slender structure and represents the ideal DIY solution for lighting an unlit hallway. It is a lamp that develops in height but, if preferred, can be placed along the baseboard.

The elongated shape of fluorescent tubes has for years hindered the success of this light source, which is not very aesthetically interesting even though it consumes little and is restful. In our case, it becomes a winner: the light spreads across the entire height not only through the plexiglass, in a color harmonized with the environment, but also through the perforated sheet metal, creating pleasant light effects.

PERFORATED SHEET METAL
It is found in panels of different thicknesses and sizes that have continuous holes arranged in a regular pattern, whose function is to considerably reduce the weight of the sheet metal. The holes, more or less large depending on the thickness, are usually square or round in shape, but you can also find "fancy" ones, for example in the shape of a flower. The 0.5 mm thick sheet has rather dense holes and can be easily cut with a common DIY shear: it is easier to find at a blacksmith's workshop or a metal carpentry wholesaler, rarely at DIY centers. The size of the holes allows you to connect the pieces that make up the structure with rivets and to the wooden base with screws without needing drilling, an operation instead necessary for fixing the upper profiles.
MATERIALS
- 0.5 mm perforated sheet metal: 2 strips 130×2000 mm and 3 pieces 130×130 mm
- 2 nail-head profiles 18×2000 mm
- Wooden strip 2000x100x20 mm
- 2 complete 30 W neon lights 930 mm long
- Rivets
- 3×16 mm screws
- Three-core electrical wire
- Foot switch
- 1 strip of colored plexiglass 3x10x2000 mm
- Silver spray
CUTTING THE SHEET METAL
With shears for straight cuts, the 0.5 mm sheet metal is easily cut and the cut line remains clean, without burrs. Given the length of the strip, be careful not to deform it as you proceed with the cut. Lock the strips, first one and then the other, between two wooden strips, leaving about 1 cm protruding to be folded at 90°. This forms the support for the plexiglass strip.
Assembly Tips
For a clean finish, use a home improvement rivet tool to join the metal pieces. The wooden base can be sanded and painted to match your decor. Consider adding a modern wall light to complement the design.
