5 Reasons to Avoid Swiss Post for Businesses: Review and Experience 2026

In the world of international business, reliability is the cornerstone of trust. When we send or receive goods, we assume that the integrity of our parcels is guaranteed by the carrier.

However, my recent professional experience in Switzerland has completely shattered this illusion. While Swiss Post enjoys a global reputation for "Swiss precision," the reality on the ground—especially regarding the security of correspondence—is alarming.

5 Reasons to Avoid Swiss Post for Businesses

1. Recurring Violations of Postal Secrecy

The primary reason to reconsider your partnership with Swiss Post is the systemic failure to protect the contents of your shipments.

Over a period of just a few months, I documented multiple instances where parcels were delivered with the original adhesive tape tampered with or completely cut open. This isn't a case of "rough handling" during transport; these are surgical openings designed to inspect the contents.

More and more people are documenting these violations by the Swiss Post on Reddit and Swissforum.

Compromised Business Confidentiality

For a business, every parcel contains sensitive information, whether it’s a prototype, a legal document, or high-value goods. When a carrier delivers a package that has clearly been searched, your entire supply chain security is compromised. In my experience, these openings occurred even when the parcels were under the exclusive custody of the post office at the counter.

2. Lack of Accountability and Legal Protection

One might assume that in a country like Switzerland, the law would strictly punish the violation of postal secrecy (Article 179 of the Penal Code). Unfortunately, my experience shows that the Public Prosecutor's Office and the legal framework seem to provide a shield for the carrier rather than the victim.

"The most disturbing discovery was that the Public Prosecutor can refuse to investigate even when evidence of tampered parcels at the post office counter is provided, effectively allowing these practices to continue under the protection of the law."

3. Inconsistent Delivery Standards

Whether you are an individual or a business entity, the service remains unpredictable. I have seen parcels left wide open in mailboxes and others handed over at official counters (like the Montbrillant office in Geneva) already tampered with.

When the "official" point of contact delivers a compromised product, you lose all recourse with your own clients, as the burden of proof falls on you, not the carrier.

4. Institutionalized Indifference to Complaints

When I filed a formal criminal complaint regarding these repeated violations, the response from the authorities was a swift "no-entry" order.

The justification? A lack of "sufficient suspicion" or the inability to identify a specific culprit among the staff.

However, I provided a documented complaint with photos, dates and times of opened packages.

For a business, this means that even if your goods are regularly searched or damaged by postal employees, the state may not intervene to help you identify the perpetrator.

5. Risk to Brand Reputation

As a business owner, your carrier is an extension of your brand. If your customers receive packages that look like they’ve been pillaged or inspected by unauthorized hands, it reflects poorly on you.

Given that the Swiss judicial system appears reluctant to hold the national carrier accountable for these breaches, using Swiss Post represents a significant reputational risk that is simply not worth the "convenience" of their network.

Final Thoughts: A Call for Alternatives

The protection of the secret of correspondence is not just a luxury; it is a fundamental right. When a national institution delivers opened parcels to individuals and businesses alike, and does so with the apparent immunity granted by the Public Prosecutor, it is time to look for private alternatives.

If you value the privacy of your business dealings in Switzerland, my recommendation is clear: avoid the national carrier Swiss Post until systemic reforms and true accountability are established.
