In 2007, the UK was an experiential art wasteland. There were no rooftop bars, no pop-up sculpture parks, and no immersive art experiences. Then Bold Tendencies arrived, transforming a multi-storey Peckham car park into a cultural phenomenon that would reshape British art forever. Now celebrating its 20th summer season, this landmark project has welcomed over 3 million visitors and set a new standard for accessible, bold contemporary art.

What started as a daring experiment by gallerist Hannah Barry has become a blueprint for urban art spaces worldwide. By filling concrete floors with sculptures, painting a staircase bright pink, and building a cocktail bar on the roof, Bold Tendencies proved that art could thrive outside traditional galleries. Its success inspired countless imitators, from London's Frameless to the Hayward Gallery's Instagram-friendly exhibitions.

The Birth of a Cultural Icon

In 2007, Peckham was a different place. The area had cheap rents, a handful of project spaces, and a single dive bar called Bar Story. Squeezed between Camberwell College of Arts and Goldsmiths, it attracted a dense community of artists. The London Overground hadn't arrived yet, creating a sense of isolation that fostered creativity. "I found it to be a place of great possibility," Barry recalls. "And it still feels like that."

Barry had been organizing exhibitions in a semi-derelict house on Lyndhurst Road when she saw the car park's potential. The building behind Peckhamplex cinema offered vast, open spaces perfect for large-scale sculptures. She launched Bold Tendencies with a simple mission: commission new artworks and make them free to the public. Two decades later, the project has hosted dozens of commissions, countless recitals, and built its own auditorium and concert hall.

Iconic Artworks and Moments

The car park's raw concrete walls have seen some of the most memorable installations in British art. In 2010, Anthea Hamilton built "a doorway to heaven through a man's splayed legs." The following year, Jess Flood-Paddock parked Del Boy's three-wheeled van on the roof. In 2014, James Bridle flew a black balloon filled with wifi routers from the rooftop. More recently, Adam Farah-Saad installed a decorative retro water fountain in 2024.

Other highlights include piles of raw pigment, fluttering flags, wobbly walkways, and heads on spikes. Almost all works are newly commissioned and free to see. "Part of our responsibility is to offer up the joy of feeling welcome to as many people as possible," Barry explains. "People come for all sorts of reasons. What matters is that they're curious enough to come."

Impact on British Art Landscape

Before Bold Tendencies, large-scale sculptural commissions were rare. The only options were the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square and the Tate's annual Turbine Hall and Duveen projects. There was nowhere else to see new sculptural work by young artists. Bold Tendencies changed that, creating a model for experiential art that museums and galleries would later adopt.

The project's influence extends beyond art. It helped revitalize Peckham, drawing visitors who might never have explored the area. The rooftop bar became a template for urban leisure spaces, while the pink staircase became an Instagram sensation. Bold Tendencies proved that experimental art could be both accessible and commercially viable.

What the Future Holds

As Bold Tendencies enters its third decade, it continues to evolve. The 20th summer season promises new commissions, performances, and events. Barry remains committed to the project's original ethos: supporting emerging artists and welcoming everyone. "The joy of feeling welcome is central to what we do," she says. The car park that changed British art shows no signs of slowing down.
