Intel 900 Series: New chipsets for desktop motherboards leaked 2026

Intel is preparing the new 900 chipset series for desktop computers and a recent leak reveals in detail the technical characteristics of all models. The 900 series chipsets will accompany the upcoming Nova Lake-S processors and will bring significant changes in terms of connectivity and infrastructure.

New platform with focus on I/O
Intel is reportedly planning five main chipsets in the 900 series: Z990, Z970, W980, Q970 and B960. All are intended for desktop use, with a clear separation between enthusiast, workstation, business and mainstream systems. The common denominator is increased support for PCIe lanes and the integration of more high-speed USB ports.

The new platform is expected to use a different socket compared to current solutions, which means new motherboards will be required for the Nova Lake-S processors.

Z990 and Z970 for demanding users
The Z990 is placed at the top of the range and is aimed at enthusiasts. It offers the largest number of PCIe lanes, PCIe 5.0 support from the chipset, more high-speed USB 3.2 ports and full overclockability, both on the processor and memory.

The Z970 is a more limited but still powerful option, with fewer PCIe lanes and ports, but retaining overclockability, making it suitable for high-end mainstream builds.

W980 and Q970 for professional use
The W980 is aimed at workstations and offers a similar level of connectivity to the Z990, but without processor overclocking support. Instead, the emphasis is on stability and multiple I/O options.

The Q970 is mainly aimed at professional and corporate systems, with extensive connectivity, many SATA and USB ports, but without overclocking capabilities, following the philosophy of Intel's business platforms.

B960 for mainstream systems
The B960 is the most affordable chipset in the series and is intended for mainstream PCs. It has clearly fewer PCIe lanes and ports than the higher models, but maintaining modern specifications and support for faster memories.

What the 900 series means for users
The leak shows that Intel is investing heavily in improving connectivity, with more PCIe lanes, better PCIe 5.0 support, and increased USB4/Thunderbolt presence on more chipsets. This translates into more flexibility for graphics cards, storage media and high-speed peripherals.

Although this is unofficial information, the picture that is forming shows a clear upgrade over today's 800 series, especially for those planning a future desktop system upgrade.
