3-Week Thailand Travel Itinerary
Please note that this itinerary is designed for first-time travelers to Thailand who want to get an overview of the country and visit its most famous corners. If you are looking for ideas for an original itinerary or if you have already been to Thailand and want to see less touristy places, we highly recommend the eastern part of the country .
That being said… here is our 3-week Thailand travel itinerary:
Day 1, 2 and 3
– Bangkok –
Chances are, any Thailand itinerary will start here, as you'll almost certainly land in the country's capital. A memorable memory awaits you: you'll be faced with Thailand's famous humidity for the first time.
You'll arrive at your little hotel (or hostel) and begin to enjoy one of the most incredible cities in the world. There are two types of reactions: either you love Bangkok, or you can't wait to leave it behind. We're one of the former, so we recommend spending 3 full days here to see and do everything Bangkok has to offer.

→ The best temples in Bangkok
→ Where to eat in Bangkok

Day 4
– Ayutthaya –
We begin our itinerary towards the north of Thailand , but we don't have to go too far from the capital to find an essential first stop: Ayutthaya , which was the capital of the kingdom of Siam between 1350 and 1767.
→ Everything to see in Ayutthaya
Tip : If you have to cut a day off your travel itinerary, you can skip this stop, as the next one, while not the same, is of the same style.

Days 5 and 6
– Sukhothai –
In Sukhothai you will find the Historical Park , for us the best in the whole country. This city was the capital of the Sukhothai kingdom during the 13th and 14th centuries. Today you can visit the ruins of the wonderful temples , and what better way to do it than by renting a bicycle and going at your own pace (but bring water and a hat!)
It is also a great place to find cheap accommodation with a swimming pool. The ideal stay is 2 days: the first to enjoy the pool and then go out to dinner at the night market or one of its restaurants (Sukhothai has some interesting culinary specialties). And the second to visit the Sukhothai Historical Park in the morning and continue the trip in the afternoon.
For us, Sukhothai is a must on a travel itinerary to Thailand *_* we have been there 3 times already and we don't rule out going back hehe.
→ All the information to plan your visit to Sukhothai
Days 7, 8 and 9
– Chiang Mai –
We spent several months living in Chiang Mai and we can't deny that it is our favourite city in all of Thailand . It has an interesting history, hundreds of temples and offers unique cuisine with different flavours. It is also perfectly adapted for tourism and has many quality and affordable accommodations. There is a large expat community so this may be a good place to share experiences with other travellers.

Tip : Elephant Nature Park was once considered one of the few responsible elephant sanctuaries in Thailand, but that is no longer the case. So we are sorry to ask you not to get involved in the animal business and skip this visit, no matter how much you want to. Instead, you can sign up for a cooking class, go trekking up Doi Suthep or simply enjoy all that Chiang Mai has to offer… and that is a lot.

– Chiang Rai –
From Chiang Mai you can take a day trip to Chiang Rai, or stay overnight and have more time. You can also reverse the order and arrive first to Chiang Rai from Sukhothai and then continue to Chiang Mai. What is clear is that, for us, Chiang Rai is a very interesting visit , with different and original temples and a much more authentic atmosphere. Hire a taxi to take a tour of the main attractions: the White Temple , the Black House and the new Blue Temple . And at night, enjoy its night market.

Optional: Northern Thailand
If beaches are not your thing and you want to spend more time in other parts of Thailand, a good idea is to continue north of the country and visit the hippie town of Pai or the border area of Mae Hong Son . There are wonderful mountain landscapes, different ethnic groups and cultures, more authentic places and many surprises.

Days 11 – 20
– Southern Islands of Thailand –
Here we are going to open a small parenthesis: in Thailand there are lots of islands . So depending on what you want to do (and find) we are going to recommend some… and you choose. And if you have a few days left, the best thing is to visit several islands!
⭐ If you are not entirely sure, here we tell you which are the 10 most beautiful islands in Thailand .
How to get to the islands?
The first thing you need to do is find the airport closest to the island you want to visit. There are usually websites that include transportation packages, with pick-up at the airport and transfer to the pier, and sometimes they also include the ferry ticket. If not, you can always try to go on your own or share the transfers with other travelers to make it cheaper.
Airlines such as AirAsia and NokAir sometimes also sell the complete package: flight + transfer + ferry. To do this, you will need to enter the island itself as your destination in your search.
You can also search for transfers and ferries on the bookaway website or on 12go.asia .
More touristy option: Phuket and Phi Phi Island
It is not at all the option we would recommend, as they are two of the most touristic destinations in all of Asia. But if one of your dreams is to visit “The Beach”, you have to go to the Phi Phi Islands no matter what. We went in 2010 and it was already packed with tourists. We did not go back, but we know that things have been getting worse. That said, the beach is a real wonder.
Phuket province has several interesting islands (such as Koh Racha Yai and Koh Racha Noi in the south, or Koh Yao Yai in Phang Nga Bay), with nice beaches and some with accommodation. However, they are quite touristy and expensive. Staying in Phuket and going on excursions is not a bad option if you want to discover this part of Thailand, but the atmosphere is not the best (in our opinion). Although it is so big, you can always find your ideal spot (ours is the Baan Krating Resort ).
Nearest airport: Phuket
Intermediate option: Krabi and Railay
In the Krabi region there are several islands that can be visited on a day trip, such as Koh Poda or Koh Hong , and you can stay in the beach area of Ao Nang (quite touristy) or on the Railay Peninsula , where there are cheap accommodations in the Tonsai part and more expensive ones in the following parts.
Nearest airport: Krabi
(Almost) original option: Trang Islands
This is what we did on one of our last trips to Thailand. We went to Krabi and from there we went down to Koh Mook , where we stayed for a few days. We also visited Koh Kradan and the beautiful Emerald Cave, a sea cave that turns into a beautiful hidden beach. There is also accommodation on the island of Koh Ngai . We tell you more here .
Nearest airport: Trang

Option near Bangkok: Trat Islands
Between Bangkok and on the way to Cambodia there are a couple of islands that have become increasingly popular among backpackers. We are talking about Koh Chang and Koh Kood , with accommodation options for all tastes, guaranteed entertainment and plenty of relaxation. Koh Chang is a little more developed than its neighbour, there is more atmosphere and the island is bigger. But we think that both are a good option.
Nearest airport: Trat or bus from Bangkok (4 hours)
Option for diving lovers: Koh Tao
If one of your dreams is to learn to dive , Koh Tao is your island. It is one of the best places in the world to get your PADI (and one of the cheapest). If you simply want to enjoy some diving, you can add a small island to your itinerary: the famous Koh Phangan , the same one where the full moon party takes place, although don't be mistaken... it's not all crazy parties there, there are places where you can spend a few days relaxing. In this area there is also Koh Samui , a large island with many accommodation options, pretty cool beaches and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Nearest airport: Surat Thani, Samui or Chumphon
Option to the south: Koh Lipe
You've probably heard about Koh Lipe , as many travellers say it's the most beautiful island in all of Thailand. Although it takes a few hours to get there (it's almost in Malaysia), once you get there you'll love it! Of course, it's a small and quite touristy island , so you'll have to share paradise with a few travellers like you (and many Spaniards hehe). But tourists always end up in the same places... so many islands!
Nearest airport: Hat Yai or Trang
Total traveler option: Khao Sok National Park
If you can find a day to spend in a National Park, it's a good idea to spend a couple of days in this beautiful corner of southern Thailand. In reality, it's not a place to walk through lush jungles or see wild animals, but rather a place to relax, sleeping in cabins next to a lake, facing some amazing landscapes. But mixed with activities, such as nature walks, visits to caves, kayaking, etc.

Which islands to choose for your route through Thailand?
While it is true that the weather is crazy (and there are still people who do not believe in climate change) depending on the date of your trip it will be better to go to one area or another. Theoretically, the monsoon especially affects the east coast (Gulf of Thailand) in the months of October, November and December and the west coast ( Andaman Sea ) during August, September and October. Although, as we said… who knows, the weather is crazy!
Day 21
– Bangkok, end of the 3-week Thailand travel itinerary –
You will have just enough time to eat the last pad thai, feel the chaos of the enormous capital of Thailand and say goodbye to the country of smiles… although we are sure that more than a “goodbye” it will be a “see you soon!” Thailand is addictive, as two people who return every year can tell you.
Hopefully this 3-week Thailand travel itinerary will help you if you are a little lost. Have you visited Thailand? Do you think we have left out any essential destinations?
