David Film Review: Biblical Animation Musical with Boyband Charm 2026

David film review: This biblical animation musical offers an upbeat boybandish worship experience that might surprise you. Directed with a fresh take on the classic story, the film blends sword-and-sandal action with contemporary praise songs, creating a unique entry in Christian cinema. While the singing may not hit every note, the animation and storytelling provide unexpected entertainment.

Plot Overview: From Shepherd to King

The film follows the biblical narrative of David, from his humble beginnings as a shepherd boy to his anointing by the prophet Samuel and his legendary victory over Goliath. The story then shifts to David's time at King Saul's court, where he navigates political intrigue, brotherly betrayal, and the looming threat of the Philistines and Amalekites. The pacing is brisk, with the Goliath confrontation occurring early, allowing more room for the complex dynamics of David's rise to power.

Animation and Visuals: A Cut Above

One of the film's strongest assets is its animation quality. The character designs are expressive, particularly the terrifying Amalekite warriors with their horned helmets and animal pelts. The battle scenes are well-choreographed and PG-approved, offering enough excitement without being overly graphic. The visual style is polished, making it a feast for the eyes even when the plot meanders.

Music and Worship Songs: A Double-Edged Sword

The soundtrack is dominated by upbeat worship songs that give the film a boyband-like energy. However, the vocal performances are often the weak link, with some numbers feeling flat or overly preachy. That said, the songs do reinforce the film's spiritual themes, and fans of contemporary Christian music may find them uplifting. The balance between musical numbers and narrative is uneven, but the film never loses its focus on David's journey.

Characterisation: David's Shallow Depth

David himself is portrayed as devastatingly handsome and brave, but his psychological depth is as shallow as a daisy. The film struggles to make him relatable beyond his heroic deeds. In contrast, supporting characters like Samuel and Saul are given more nuance, adding layers to the political machinations. The voice acting is competent, with Brandon Engman and Phil Wickham handling the younger and older David respectively, but the script doesn't give them much to work with.

Comparison with Other Biblical Animated Films

To better understand where this film stands, let's compare it with other recent biblical animations:

As the table shows, David holds its own in animation but falls short in musical execution compared to classics like The Prince of Egypt. Its strength lies in its visual storytelling and the timeless appeal of the biblical narrative.

• Music is upbeat but vocally weak, with a worship-heavy tone.
• Character depth is lacking for David, but supporting roles shine.
• Faithfulness to the Bible is moderate, with creative liberties.
• Overall, it's an entertaining film for families and Christian audiences.
