The picturesque island of Ischia is located in the Gulf of Naples and is right next to the much better known island of Capri. Overall, however, Ischia is about three times larger. The island was once created by a volcanic explosion and today, in addition to good wine, it also offers a lot of cliffs. Nevertheless, there are also some sandy beaches here, which of course cannot be missed on a holiday on Ischia. Sunnytrips shows which of these should be on every bucket list and presents six of the most beautiful beaches on Ischia.
The most popular main holiday resorts on the island of Ischia are Porto, Forio, Lacco Ameno and Sant Àngelo. They are particularly suitable as a starting point for a booking, as there are not only numerous hotel complexes here, but also most of the sandy beaches. Since Ischia was created by a huge volcanic explosion around 60,000 years ago, very good wine grows on its fertile soil. The island is also known for its wealth of butterfly species, which is why people from butterfly research can regularly be found here. However, Ischia is most popular as a destination for beach holidays because, in addition to its rugged cliffs, it also offers some beaches with wonderfully soft sand. Sunnytrips has made a selection and shows six of the most beautiful beaches on Ischia.

3. Spiaggia di San Montano – in the north

1. Maronti Beach – in the south
BILD Reisen: Discover the best hotels on Ischia now!
Maronti Beach belongs to the district of the same name in the municipality of Barano d’Ischia and is located in a 2 kilometer long bay. This makes it not only the longest beach in Ischia, but also directly borders the beautiful serpentine road from Testaccio in Barano d’Ischia. The beach is easy to reach by car, or you can also take the Garibaldi footpath. Maronti Beach is also well connected by taxi boats from Sant’Angelo and the bus from Ischia Porto. The southern location of Maronti Beach also ensures that the sun shines here from morning to evening. And you can enjoy it particularly well there thanks to the soft, light sand! Small shops, restaurants and cafés, all of which are located on the Piazzetta, provide variety. As on most of the island's beaches, sun loungers and parasols can be rented here. Our tip: The Rena Ischia restaurant! With Italian dishes in a tasteful setting, there is a view of the sea and music events in the evenings.

2. Spiaggia di Citara – to the west
The Spiaggia di Citara is located in Forio d’Ischia and therefore in the west of the island of Ischia. This beach is said to have received its name from the Roman goddess Venere Citarea. Because of its location, the waves at Spiaggia di Citara are comparatively strong. Nevertheless, the beach is perfect for snorkeling because the water is clear and the sea creatures feel right at home in the shade of the rock walls. Entry to the beach is also free, dogs are allowed and umbrellas and loungers can be rented for a daily fee. If you're looking for refreshment after a long day at the beach, you'll find it nearby, as there's a beach promenade right next door. Our tip: 19 minutes' drive from the beach is a small museum at the top of the hill. Entry to the Casa Museo is free and you can see artistic fortifications made from various natural materials. Including mosaics, sculptures and other installations. A trip is definitely worth it just because of the special atmosphere and small donations are of course welcome!

3. Spiaggia di San Montano – in the north
The Spiaggia di San Montano is also called Baia di San Montano and is located in the very north of Ischia. Not only is it one of the most beautiful beaches on the island, but it is also considered one of the most romantic! Because it is located in a hidden bay, which is also in the area of the Negombo Thermal Garden. In addition to fine, light sand, there is crystal clear water and, thanks to the sheltered location, gentle waves. It's the perfect place for lounging in the sun or snorkeling underwater. Our tip: The Luchino Visconti Museum is just a few minutes away. The villa sits majestically on a rock above the sea and is worth a visit for this appearance alone. The terraces offer a breathtaking view of the sea, and inside the house you can learn a lot about the history of the island.

4. La Chiaia Beach – to the west
Chiaia Beach is probably one of the widest sandy beaches on the island. You can spend the day here on a free beach area or a paid beach area. What makes La Chiaia Beach one of the most beautiful beaches is its all-round carefree package. In addition to free parking, there is another special feature for families with children: At the Ischia Summer Camp, children receive care, games and fun, while parents have a little time for themselves. The beach area also offers showers, which even have dispensers for soap and shampoo. Our tip: If you decide to go to this beach, you should definitely take a detour to the port of Forio. In addition to numerous restaurants, it also offers some shops for leisurely harbor shopping.

5. Spiaggia di San Francesco – in the northwest
As is often the case in Italy, access to this beach is chargeable. The daily rates vary depending on the season and can be found online in advance. The advantage of the limited access is that the Spiaggia di San Francesco is remarkably clean. In addition, there is the best view of the sunset here and drinks, loungers and parasols are also provided. So you can find everything your holiday heart desires here - albeit for a certain price. Our tip: Above the beach is the La Mortella Botanical Garden. Halfway there is also the Piazzale San Francesco hiking trail. The two could therefore be wonderfully combined with each other!

6. La Mandra Beach – to the east
La Mandra Beach is a rather small beach on Ischia and is located between Ischia Porto and Ischia Ponte. The latter is also home to the island's landmark: the Castello Aragonese! Although La Mandra can get busy during high season, it is very quiet most of the year. Access to the beach is completely free, and it offers not only the fabulous view of the fortress, but also of the islands of Vivara and Procida. Our tip: The origins of the Castello Aragonese date back to the 5th century BC, when the Greeks built the first fortifications on the rock. Over time, it served as a defense facility, a residence for nobles, a monastery and later even a prison. Today the Castello Aragonese can be reached on foot via a stone bridge. There is an entrance fee, but both the atmosphere and the history make the visit worthwhile. There is also a café and restaurant inside the fortress overlooking the sea. An absolute must for a holiday on Ischia!
