Various places in Italy have been making headlines for years with some original initiatives against the increasing depopulation of small towns and villages. Sometimes there are cash gifts or other donations for those wishing to immigrate, sometimes entire houses are “given away” for just one euro. The northern Italian province of Trentino is now following suit - and is paying people who move there an amount of up to 100,000 euros. But of course there are some conditions for serious interested parties in this case too.
The Autonomous Province of Trentino, which forms the southern part of the Trentino-South Tyrol region, is one of the most beautiful and popular holiday regions in Italy. No wonder, because Trentino offers a beautiful and varied landscape, with mountains more than 3500 meters high, picturesque valleys, clear lakes and exciting cities, especially the provincial capital Trento. Trentino also has a share on the northern shore of Lake Garda.
But despite its beauty and tourist relevance, Trentino has a problem like so many regions throughout Italy: increasing depopulation, especially of villages in rural areas. Many people are moving to the cities, and birth rates are falling accordingly. Trentino is now countering this development with an ambitious program that is intended to attract new residents. And compared to other initiatives, it goes a step further in financial terms: As the Autonomous Province of Trentino recently announced, people who move to one of more than 30 selected municipalities can receive up to 100,000 euros.

In this case, too, new residents do not simply receive this considerable sum for free. On the one hand, the purchase of an uninhabited property in one of the listed communities is mandatory. Applicants can receive a grant of a maximum of 20,000 euros for the purchase. A further grant of up to 80,000 euros will then be added for the renovation.
In principle, anyone can apply for the subsidies for Trentino, including German citizens. However, there is a requirement that the purchaser of the property themselves moves in there for a period of at least 10 years. Alternatively, according to the province's press release, he can rent it out "at a moderate rental price" to people who move their residence to the municipality in question.

Segonzano, Sover, Terragnolo, Tre Ville, Valdaone, Valfloriana, Vallarsa and Vermiglio.

Maurizio Fugatti, the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento, announced on Tuesday at a meeting with the mayors of the participating municipalities that a final decision on the program would be made between April 20 and 25. The tender will begin immediately afterwards.
