In March there were severe storms with floods and flash floods, especially in the Liguria and Tuscany regions (see photo above). This week the weather forecast for Piedmont is particularly worrying. The “Wetter.de” service, which works with recognized meteorologists, is expecting floods on Good Friday. “There will be torrential rain in Italy until Friday morning, which will most certainly trigger flooding,” it says.
According to “Wetter.com”, a particularly endangered area is between Milan and Turin, northwest of the typical southeastern Alpine reservoirs. Here, moist Mediterranean air masses hit the mountains, rise, cool down and lead to heavy, continuous rain. Other popular holiday regions such as Verona, the Dolomites, the Carnic Alps and Ljubljana are also affected. Up to 250 liters of rain per square meter can fall locally. The risk of floods and landslides is high.

What travelers should know
The latest forecasts seem to give rise to hope that the weather in Europe could calm down somewhat by the Easter weekend. Good Friday in particular seems to bring a slight improvement in the weather. According to “Wetter.com”, the situation could worsen again afterwards. Anyone who has planned a camping holiday to one of the countries in Europe affected by storms should postpone it as a precaution.

In general, travelers who have booked a package tour and are staying in regions affected by extreme weather should contact their tour operator directly. This can provide up-to-date information on the weather situation and, if necessary, help with adjusting travel plans.
