Have you ever traveled to a place because there was supposed to be an attraction there that was so worth seeing - and then were more than disappointed? You are not alone in this. An international luggage storage company conducted a large study to determine which places a particularly large number of people went to have similar experiences. Sunnytrips presents the most overrated sights in the world.
Radical Storage partners with various hotels, restaurants and stores to offer luggage storage options in a variety of locations. His ranking of the most frequently overrated sights, which will be discussed in more detail below, could serve as a useful source of information for your travel-loving target group. Of course, knowing which attractions you can safely skip is particularly valuable when you have a tight budget and limited time.

The attractions included come from a list of 5832 attractions in 50 of the most visited countries worldwide. The basis for this was the “Top 100 City Destinations” rankings from EuroMonitor and the “Global Cities Index” from Mastercard, which evaluate cities based on visitor numbers and global connectivity. Various countries currently at war were excluded from the analysis.
Radical Storage analysts evaluated a total of 95,352 online reviews of the selected attractions. These came from various sources, including the attractions' official websites, tourism reports and specialist travel portals. To determine which places had particularly disappointed visitors, they filtered reviews based on 90 keywords, including “disappointing,” “boring,” “overpriced,” and “inaccessible.”
First place goes to a theme park in the United Kingdom
You probably don't even know about the attraction that is considered the most overrated. But around England, where it is located, the Alton Towers leisure complex (see photo above) is well known. The magnificent park, once privately owned by a count, was opened to paying visitors in the 19th century. Since the 1990s it has had rides spread across a total of 10 themed areas. With an area of around 910 hectares, the conditions for a fun visit would actually be there. Nevertheless, around half of the reviewing users said they had had bad experiences. That's steep considering that, according to Radical Storage, the average share of negative reviews for the attractions was 10.9 percent.
Second place goes to the world-famous Széchenyi Baths in Budapest, Hungary, the largest spa in all of Europe. But even though it has attracted numerous wellness tourists from all over the world every year since it opened in 1913, 37.2 percent of the reviews indicate an unpleasant experience. Crowding and poor accessibility were often criticized.
The third negative place is also quite surprising. It goes to Siam Park on Tenerife, which owes its name to the facility's Thai motto - that's right: the water park, which has repeatedly won the coveted Travelers' Choice Awards. Many users complain about the rudeness of the staff and there are also problems with accessibility. Body shaming is also reported. A disadvantage of the study is that the ratings are not fully visible.

Where most of the disappointing attractions are located
It is no secret that Italian cities like Rome are affected by overtourism. And it is precisely the symptoms of this problem that have given the famous Trevi Fountain in the “Eternal City” many bad reviews and a place in the middle of the inglorious top 10. It is said that you cannot get to it because of the large crowds, and the fountain was closed for a long time in 2024. And Italy again: The Gardaland park near Lake Garda of the same name, which has become a lot more attractive since last summer, also doesn't fare so well in terms of user experience. Around a quarter of the reviews are negative.
As the study further shows, when comparing countries, Great Britain, Portugal and Canada are the ones with the most overestimated sights. Germany takes 11th place in this separate ranking (of 11 shown).
From overrated to a well-rated attraction
The study also shows which sights received only a few bad reviews. Here, the famous, approximately 2.3 kilometer long elevated railway park on a former freight train route in New York City, better known as High Line Park (often also: High Line), takes an impressive first place. The proportion of negative reviews is an extremely low 1.6 percent - which is quite remarkable since we know that people are more likely to leave reviews when they want to complain. In this case, the praise far outweighs the praise. Find out more about this impressive location here.
